    As requested:

    Paperback writer

    Paper back writer (paperback writer)
Dear Sir or Madam, will you read my book?
It took me years to write, will you take a look?
It's based on a novel by a man named Lear
And I need a job, so I want to be a paperback writer,
    Paperback writer.

It's the dirty story of a dirty man
And his clinging wife doesn't understand.
His son is working for the Daily Mail,
It's a steady job but he wants to be a paperback writer,
    Paperback writer.

    Paperback writer (paperback writer)

It's a thousand pages, give or take a few,
I'll be writing more in a week or two.
I can make it longer if you like the style,
I can change it round and I want to be a paperback writer,
    Paperback writer.

If you really like it you can have the rights,
It could make a million for you overnight.
If you must return it, you can send it here
But I need a break and I want to be a paperback writer,
    Paperback writer.

You've got an interesting shelf as well. I am familiar with Erich Fromm. I've read a bit of The Sane Society and thought it was right on the money. I am familiar with the Theosophical writers as well. Steiner probably had the most going for him out of that group in my opinion.

Thank you for the friend request. I do recommend The Poisonwood Bible as long as you have the patience to trudge through the first 1/4 of the book. If you are someone who needs to be hooked in the beginning you may find yourself frustrated with the plot. However, it does become a fascinating read. I enjoyed it. Happy reading.

You have written to ask whether the current economic crisis is, IMHO, the end of capitalism. My answer is that, IMHO, there is really nothing much left to end.

The term "capitalism" is used in two ways. In general, most people today seem to use it, perhaps unconsciously, in the way that Marx defined it, as a stage of economic/social evoluition. That usage, of course nonsensical for the same reasons that all historicism is nonsensical. The other coherent way to use the term "capitalism" is as an economic system with certain basic characteristics such as freedom to contract based on clearly defined property rights.

Restricting my remarks to the U.S., "capitalism" was under serious attack by the 1830s, was on the retreat by the 1880s, and was beaten to a pulp in the 1920a-30s and pretty much ceased to exist by the 1970s. The economy of the U.S. since then is more accurately described as fascism. A fascist economy is one where the government does not own "the means of production and distribution" but dictates their use through various forms of regulatory control.

So do I think that the present crisis will "end capitalism"? No, I think the most it will do is make controls that have existed, in most cases, since the 1930s more evident to noneconomists.

As one of my Shelfari friends, I would like to invite you to be among the first readers to review my new book "Moments of Forever: Discovering the True Power and Importance of Your Life" (a registered Shelfari title). It is a practical study in metaphysics that will help you find greater meaning in your life. It has been available for just a few weeks but it has already gained much acclaim within the large iUniverse publishing house—receiving the “Editor’s Choice” award and being honored as a “Rising Star” title. “Moments of Forever” is a book that will benefit and enrich the lives of people for many years to come. Please help me launch this very special book with your personal Shelfari review.

    Thank you!

I presume that you're referring to Charles Kimball's book, which, yes, I've read. While I am impressed by this volume and Mr. Kimball, I prefer the somewhat older series on fundamentalisms by the Fundamentalism Project, see, e.g., http://www.amazon.com/Fundamentalisms-Observed-Fundamentalism-Project-Martin/dp/0226508781/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1239964954&sr=1-1

Please take a look, also, at my very short "essay" on this topic in the Real World Jews group on Shelfari.
