I am in the afternoon of my life, married to my sweetheart and best friend for more than 40 years, and retired from a long career in finance. I enjoy just about everything and I like practically everyone I meet. I spend my time looking after my family (including our adorable little cat), cooking, reading, enjoying music (and even trying to... more »

You got my attention with the afternoon of your life! We'll be married 44 years in August but I hadn't started thinking it was the afternoon of my life yet....maybe I'd better think about this. Thanks? Judy Enjoyed your shelf!

Oh I find modern royalty semi-interesting because it really has no useful function in society, except maybe as an icon, the people unwitting players in a national soap opera. I'm not someone who values royalty or history thinking it great. A lot of it is bad and ludicrous- (but entertaining, nonetheless) and from that hopefully people learn from their mistakes.

I'm not from the UK so that national/royal history means nothing to me and I don't think I would gain anything from reading about it. Princess Diana on the other hand, fascinates me. Despite the turmoil of her tragic, dramatic life, I admire her work for charity, I think the world lost a great humanitarian. Not many people in her position had the impact and the compassion she actively demonstrated.

Hello bookmark, about Remains of the Day comment, oh it's nothing ..I like this site because you find readers who feel the same as you do and can articulate what the book means, or if you don't get the meaning you can find out from someone. Also it's nice to educate other readers if they don't 'get' some of the book which leads to greater appreciation or enjoyment of the book. But everyone is different and we enjoy different things and that's ok too. Royalty I find an interesting subject because they are NOT like us, although sometimes they try to be. I find them rather sad and horrible. I notice you have some books on royalty..well Princess Diana is no different, she's just a latter day incarnation married into same qrotesque family..and I find the whole upstairs/downstairs of a large estate of rich, titled families- the butlers/maids/cooks/gardeners/chauffeurs/nannies/servants and the notion of class and aristocracy kind of interesting because it is so alien to me.
