I love reading books that startle me with beauty, clarity and originality. I delight most in being brought to consider something in a way I never had before.

I see we both read Josephus. Actually, though I have a copy of his works, I have only read bits of it thus far.

Valerie, thank you for making me aware of Practicing the Power of Now. I just bought it online. :-) I'm not really frustrated as much as I am sometimes confused. I don't see the whole picture yet. I'm still very much in the learning stages of this teaching/belief system/awareness.

    Valerie:

Are you familiar with Carlos Castaneda? I began reading his work in the 1970s and have over time bought everything he wrote. Good glimpses of a pre-Christian culture and view of the spiritual world. I had the advantage of being raised in my very early years by my American Indian grandmother, and I believe that opened me to better understand the Yaqui and other groups chronicled by Castaneda.

    Valerie,
I was curious about what you said about one of the books on your shelf, about Jesus and Mary M. (The God and Goddess book) and how they re adapted the historical aspects, what interested you? If you would like to share with me please? Having taught classes, read books, etc on this subject, I am curious why you didn't finish the book and what your interest was when you stopped reading. I was wondering if it was in synthesis with your reading with Alice Walker, or some of your other works that you read on your shelves (the Anthropologist in my makes me wonder these things!) if you want to share... Thanks, Mary

hello Valerie, thanks for your comment. My books reflect what i like and am interested in. Yes we share a few books. I have read a few of Ami Tans books, but i didnt read her newest one, but saw it in the store. "The red tent' is a great book. Now to talk about Mithras. He was a god worshipped in Rome and brought from former Tarusus. Similar is Dinonysus also from Rome and Osiris in ancient Egypt. The one book" the Jesus Mysteries" has photos to back their research up. Somehow after the 1st century up to the 4th century the biology of Yeshua the gnostic mystic was intermixed with paganism. If you are interested in this, read about it. Thanks for sharing this with me.

Thanks for your comments on the Gnostics and institutional religion. I agree that politicized religion is a plague on the planet - it's not a struggle about theology - it's all about politics, control and domination.

I checked yourself - fascinated that you include a dictionary. Also - you are one of the rare readers I have encountered who is into Anais Nin. I have always treasured "The Delta of Venus." Great writing and great insight into a time and place that incubated some fantastic writing. You might enjoy Julia Tindall's books - she is a personal friend and my hatha and jnana yoga instructor for many years. Since you are also a writer, have you checked out the Book Marketing Network?

Just starting to delve into the Gnostic Gospels. I find myself wishing that more writings had survived the various purges and other losses. What a richer, purer Christianity there would be in this world.
