Many thanks for your recommendation of 'Jonathan Strange & Mr Norrell'. The fact that Neil Gaiman likes it is a big plus so far as I am concerned. As for the footnotes - I recently read The Bartimeaus Trilogy by Jonathan Stroud, which also goes in for them, and I thought it added to the charm of the book. So, thanks again :-) I may well be atrting on it tonight!
I saw that you have a few Halberstam sports books, and only one McPhee "Sense of where you are" I would just volunteer "Levels of the Game" by McPhee, it combines his honest and simple writing style with a sports topic (Arthur Ashe and one single game of Tennis) that your bookshelf would lead me to believe you would enjoy. Just a thought, hope you check out the book
