Once upon a time, an angel and a demon fell in love, which was, of course, forbidden. They imagined a world of peace, where both of their kinds were no longer at war. Not everyone shared this dream, however. Seventeen years later, art student, Karou, comes face to face with a beautiful man she has never seen before, although he does not seem truly human. Karou does not understand why she and this being, Akiva, are drawn to each other, but there is much that Karou has yet to learn about her past, a past that her guardian, Brimstone, who has raised her since she was a baby, will not share with her.

This is a beautifully written story, with a lot of emotional depth, especially as the storyline progresses. I am looking forward to reading the second book in this series soon.

When 28 year old Lexi Smart wakes up in the hospital in May 2007 after being involved in a car accident, she remembers nothing of the past three years of her life. She believes that it is still 2004, that she still has frizzy hair and crooked teeth, that she has a low paying sales job with her best friend Fi, and that her current boyfriend, Loser Dave, has recently stood her up. Her life in 2004 wasn't perfect, but she had her good friends, and she had recently moved into her very own little London flat, which she really loved. When she comes to in the hospital five days after the car accident, she is shocked to see her sleek, shiny hair and beautiful, perfect teeth in the reflection in the mirror, along with her perfectly manicured nails and much slimmer body as well. Her mother and sister also inform her that not only is she now the director of the department she used to hold a lowly sales position in, she is also married to a very wealthy and handsome man. As the days and weeks progress, and Lexi moves back "home" to a huge loft with a husband who is now a complete stranger to her, she is determined to remember how she came to be this complete unknown person she has apparently become in just three years, why her best friend Fi is not returning her calls, and why her husband's colleague, Jon the architect, seems to be looking at her very strangely, as if waiting for her to respond in some way to his rather odd behavior around her.

This is a fun, entertaining and sweet story, with some laugh out loud moments, as Lexi tries to discover how she lost her "self" in the past three years and became a driven workaholic living in a huge sterile loft with a husband she feels no connection to in any way, despite the Marriage Manual he compiled for her in order to help her regain her memory.

Set in Victorian era England, teacher Concordia Glade is determined to rescue her four students from an upcoming auction where she believes the girls, all orphans, will be forced into unwanted relationships. As Concordia and the girls attempt to make their escape, they are confronted by a guard. Apparently out of nowhere, private inquiry agent Ambrose Wells dispatches with the guard and helps Concordia and the girls make their escape. Concordia knows nothing of Ambrose, but has no choice but to trust him as they flee through the countryside on horseback. Ambrose's quiet bachelor life is turned upside down as he suddenly takes a "modern thinking" woman and her four young charges into his home, as they remain in hiding from the crime lord who planned the auction.

The dialogue in this romantic suspense is quite humorous, not only between Ambrose and Concordia, but the four girls as well, as they worry that Ambrose may "ravish" Miss Glade and ruin her reputation. This was a fun book, filled with adventure and romance.

I enjoyed this romantic suspense set in Key Largo, FL. Although marketing executive Kelsey Cunningham hasn't been back to her hometown in the Keys for several years, she plans her vacation to spend some time with her once close friend, Sheila, who has recently emailed Kelsey indicating that she is scared, of whom, Kelsey is not sure. When Kelsey arrives at Sheila's home as planned, Sheila is nowhere to be found, and apparently has not been seen in the past week by anyone. The last known person to have seen Sheila is private investigator Dane Whitelaw, another friend from Kelsey's past, who has recently returned to his home in the Keys after a bad experience in St. Augustine. When Kelsey attempts to ask Dane about Sheila's recent disappearance, he reacts in an odd way, making Sheila even more nervous and frustrated than she was before. No one seems to be overly concerned about Sheila's disappearance, as she has a habit of taking off unannounced from time to time. However, once Kelsey starts doing some investigating of her own, she apparently begins stirring things up, and soon she begins to think that she may be the next victim of the serial killer known as the Necktie Strangle.

The Checklist Manifesto: How to Get Things Right

Perhaps my least favorite of Atul Gawande's books. Still interesting, but a bit didactic. He makes a convincing case for the checklist, though, which is, after all, his purpose in writing the book.

    Astray

A good collection with several excellent stories. I liked Donoghue's essay at the end as a vehicle for connecting the stories and giving some context.

    The Middlesteins

It was a good read, but the parallels to Franzen's Freedom are overstated; Attenberg does not go nearly as deeply—or compassionately—into the lives of the characters, and everyone's motives seem too simple, almost caricatures.
