I am a happy, married, mother of five wonderful kids! I love to travel, cook, shop, talk with friends, sing, write, and dream. But nothing beats a good book!! I have and love my kindle and my kindle on iPad and iPhone, but if I really love a book I must own it and be able to hold and read it! I am drawn more to true stories, especially with... more »

Hi Tali, like you, I don't get on the site all that often but I always enjoy it when I do. I have a book to recommend if you haven't already read it. It's one of my favorites books that I've read this year-
    * The Vanishing Act of Esme Lennox* and it was excellent! I also recently enjoyed Benny and Shrimp which was an unusual *kind of* love story. A sweedish author and the book took place in Sweeden. I enjoyed it :-)

Hi again, Tali, it's good to hear from you. I agree that books can see you through some trying times whether they are sleepless nights, sitting by a sick bed, or just being bored with TV or in an airport or waiting room. I hope you find much from my shelves that will capture your interest. I don't get on shelfari very often. I only use it to keep track of my to-be-read shelves and occasionally I will remember to also note the books I've been reading. I don't belong to any of the groups nor do I have time to go exploring on the site but I value the friendships I've made (many of whom I've known prior to joining Shelfari from another message board) and so once in awhile I like to check out what my friends have put on their shelves. You and I have similar interests in themes. I wish you plenty of reading time!

Hi Tali, it's been awhile since you first befriended me and we corresponded. On a whim I decided to revisit your "plans to read" shelf since in the past we had some similar interests. I added a few new titles to my wishlist. I had never heard of the books before looking at your shelf so big thanks to you! The books that caught my eye are the following-

A Castle in the Backyard: The Dream of a House in France by Betsy Draine

All over the map by Laura Fraser

The Dirty Life: On Farming, Food, and Love by Kristin Kimball

If you get some free time drop by and visit my plan to read shelf. There's over 800 books listed there and all reside in my house just waiting to be read. I know in the past you've gotten some ideas from my shelf so I'd like to suggest one book that I didn't see on your shelf but which might interest you. It's non-fiction and called Enslaved By Ducks. It looks and sounds good.

Also, from your "plans to read" shelf, I can highly recommend that you move up the following books to be read. All very good reads-

A Walk Across America: Peter Jenkins
A Girl Named Zippy: Haven Kimmel
Three Cups of Tea: Greg Mortensen

    Happy reading!

Thanks, Tali, and what a wonderful thought Heaven will be- the great library in the sky where books can be checked out for eternity :-)

BTW, I'm 20 pages away from the end of Black Wave. Then I can work on whittling down the other two books I've started and begin the "delicious dilemma" of what other book to begin :-)

Have a great week with lots of happy reading hours!

Hi Tali! You may not recognize my avatar as I changed it. It was time to ditch the Santa hat. I was just browsing your shelf and saw Tales of a Female Nomad. I read the book last year and really enjoyed it. It's amazing how much time that woman spent living with "strangers" around the world and feeling so much at home there. I really admired that and all her adventures. I love travel adventure books. I'm kind of reading one right now- though it's more adventure-survival. It's non-fiction and about a family of 5 who save all their money and buy a huge catamaran and set sail for most of a year from New York City to Australia. They never make it that far on thier boat though as it hits a coral reef at night near Tahiti and they boat breaks apart and they become shipwrecked on the reef. It's also about their adventures along the way and ports of call before they reach that dramatic point. A very good read and I recommend it.

Oh, what's the name of the book? BLACK WAVED by John and Jean Silverwood. I am almost finished with the book.

Hey Tali, let me know when you achieve your dream and have that two story home library built. I'll join you for a cuppa tea there by the fireplace and we'll talk about books. I have a small home library. It's a fourth bedroom that we made into a library. No ladders involved except for a stepstool to reach the top shelves near the ceiling. No fireplace either but lots of shelves of books from floor to ceiling and still the room doesn't hold ALL of my To-be-read collection. You see once you fill one room a book hoarder can't stop and so it keeps spreading to more rooms around the house. If you ever have your dream room and you fill it up it will still never be enough. That is what (I hope) my room in heaven is for :-)

Thanks for the friend request. I noticed some Julia Child on your shelf. Have you had a chance to read "My Life in France" by her? I just finished it and really fell in love with Julia's personality. Happy reading!

Hi Tali, thanks for posting a note to me. Are you in Germany? I am in a suburb of Chicago, Illinois. I read your profile. I am also a mom (two daughters 19 and 21) and used to work for an airline years ago so I traveled quite a bit on the USA mainland as well as "over the pond." I've never been to Germany but my cousin attended college there and went on to work for a couple of years there. He just moved back to the states with a German fiance. He's a reader, also! I know just what you mean about loving a book and owning it. I never borrow books. I am all about book hoarding which is how I got into the business of selling used books. My book collecting outgrew the size of my house. HA HA. I can't think of anything I'd rather collect, though. I'll come back alter and browse your shelf more.

Hi Tali, thanks for the invite to be your friend. I accepted but am curious as to why you invited me. Did you check out my shelf and find common interests there? I'm new to Shelfari and don't know my way around yet and have only concentrated on listing my T0-BE-READ books around the house so far. Still working on that.

you asked if you should read Cry the Beloved Country. I am brand new here, so I don't know how things work yet, but YES, YES you should.

    It is my favorite book.

It is fiction, but it is written by a man who lived this book every day of his life. It only took him one weekend to write the book.

There are passages so beautifully written, so poetic, I have memorized them. It is heartbreaking and beautiful and it will leave you sad, but also hopeful.

Read it and if you do not like it, I will send you a Starbucks card for the price of the book.

    How's that for a can't lose deal?

Best to you, and if I am not suppose to respond to you here, please inform and forgive.

    Hi Tali,

I didn't like The Secret. I didn't like the way it was about yourself and not about other people. If you want to read a book like this, I want to recommend The monk who sold his Ferrari by Robin Sharma.
Do you like it in Japan? I'm interesting in the country and try to learn a little Japanese, but it's a difficult language. Did you live your whole life in Japan?

    Keep on reading!
    Greetings, Monique
