Reading is my secret lover. The books on my shelf are gems that I have read and adored and would recommend to anyone wanting to escape to another world. I have a crush on fantasy, myths, legends, and fairy tales, especially Arthurian legend, but I also like many other genres of fiction. For me, non-fiction is strictly for school, work, and oh...more »

...was checking out other people lists in the "fairy tales retold" group .... you have two of my favorites authors on your shelf, Ursulla and Gene Wolfe .... I thought the torturer series was excellent and I love everything that Ursula put out ... still going thru your shelf but will borrow a few suggestions from it.
    tks.

Yeah, I read it like a month ago. My friend Jen recommended it to me, so I should have known it was going to be like that. SOOOOO angsty. I read the second book too, for some reason. My friend told me what happens in the next two books so I wouldn't feel tempted to read the rest of the series. Now I'm free.

Yeah, start writing, though. Try a Young Adult romance novel starring witches or vampires or gnomes or something. Those seem to be popular.

"Reading is my secret lover" is a great opening line- good enough for a novel. I am just touching base- I turned 36 this weekend and feel a little-early middle age. I stocked up on some Amazon gift cards which makes me very happy. I am into Henry Miller these days- he is juxtaposed between Hemingway and Bukowski- quite a combination. Is "V for Vendetta" good? I really enjoyed the Natalie Portman flick. Well, dinner is calling, after all I am on the east coast. Take care and I'll keep in touch. Jason R.

That's interesting that you met the screenwriter of "The Prince of Tides"- that was a very good adapted screenplay- I prefered the book, but the film was good also. Thanks for accepting my friendship offer. Keep in touch. I noticed the title "Geek Love" in Justin's message below. That sounds interesting.

    Hi, Amber --
Nice to hear from you. The pic was taken in a Paris cafe back in March of 2003, by an American who lived in France. He ran a monthly meeting of English-speakers, and I had just finished the Kerouac & Miller books and was giving them to the group to read.

I see one of the books you plan to read is GEEK LOVE by Katherine Dunn. It was recommended to me years ago, I own it, but haven't read it yet. Let me know if you plan to start it soon, and I'll do the same. It's supposed to be brilliant but very bizarre. Would be fun to share thoughts on it once we both finished.

I liked it a lot when I was little. I don't really remember much about it, other than the fact that it was about a vampire bunny. But there's no such thing as a bad vampire bunny novel.

Have you tried reading Jack Whyte? I have a friend that really liked his Camulod series. Haven't gotten to it yet myself, but since you like Arthurian & Fantasy, thought I'd throw you a bone. :)

Well, considering my Netflix queue is as large as my TBR pile, I think I can wait to watch the miniseries! I usually like to read the book first anyway. I grew in a much different household...mine was a very liberal, very non-Bush, single mother household...but I'm glad to hear that the pagan aspect is larger than any feminist aspect. That makes it sound all the better. Thanks!

Thanks for the note, Amber. You've got a ton of great books on your shelf, as well. Like you, waiting to see when Linds will arrive with her shelf. I hope to make it to one of her parties again someday, but fatherhood (2 boys, the 2nd barely a month old) is keeping me off the party circuit for now. Hopefully I'll be games-ing it up with the gang soon.

LOL. I've wanted to read the Dune books for some time, but just haven't for some reason or another...so, I've waited to watch the miniseries. I have, however, came across it when channel surfing, and saw that there was a real hottie in it:) Hmm, I may have to skip the books and Netflix the miniseries. LOL
I see Mists of Avalon in your favorites...I've picked that up so many times, but end up not buying it. Some things I've read hint that it is very feminist...is that true? I love Arthurian legend but a overly feminist take may put me off...
