Hi David,Me again. I finally picked up THE 19TH WIFE and plan to read it in January. Still haven't gotten to PASADENA (shame on me!), but it has not been forgotten.Hope to see you in So. Cal next time you're here, get you to sign my book. Hi, Since your really on top of what´s published in US maybe I can interest you in a swedish writer, Klas Östergren. I think he´s Gentlemen was recently translated to English. I recently rered it, and it is still very good.Another of my favourites is Lars Gustafsson. he have more works translated to english.The swede
It all depends on what interests you. Food writing encompasses many different worlds. There is the novel, e.g. "The Last Chinese Chef" -- author is Moenes (sp?); M.F.K.Fisher who weaves her life and food together (stay away from her fiction, try "With Bold Knife and Fork:); Ruhlman who has written about becoming a chef. Chefs themselves who have written books, such as Anthony Bourdain. Not so contemporary would be "Hotel Splendide", Bemelman and some of the essays of Joseph Wechsberg, to name just a few. Anad then there are the food critics and editors who write books -- Ruth Reichl, Mimi Sheraton, Craig Claibourne, etc. Recently there has been a huge surge of "healthy" food books and eating and growing with environmentally proper techniques. Michael Pollan is one of the best known. I think that everyone who eats thinks they can write a book about food! The quality varies.Enough?Let me know if you find somebody that you like.Where do you teach?
Hi, you where rigth. I am just reading "My sister my love" by Joyce Carrol Oates and it is very good. And so up to date with that murdercase in Colorado in the headlines agian. But you must have gotten to read it before it was published, I guess..Any summerreading plans you want to share?the swede
Hi. I'm curious as to why you started the Food Writing group. When I look at your shelf I only see John Haney's book in this category. Are some of the other titles about food? Perhaps you are just not posting them. The "Joy of Cooking" group somewhat overlaps some of the food writing category. I'm surprised that there are so few persons interested in this group. I find it fascinating.

Thanks for writing back so quickly -- great news that you'll be back in August. Gives me time to read "Pasadena" & "The Rose City" before you and your new book arrive. Viken Berberian's "Das Kapital" and Carlos Maria Dominguez' "The House of Paper" are my most recent memorable reads. Both have strong literary styles and compelling stories. Hi, David --I met you at Vroman's Pasadena in 2002 when you were out on the West Coast promoting "Pasadena." You signed my copy of "The Danish Girl" and we talked for a brief couple of minutes. I found you to be very generous and kind, funny and sharp-witted. I just recently (finally!) picked up a copy of your 2nd novel and then I find you here on Shelfari - does that count as an official synchronicity? Looking forward to your next visit out here (for your 3rd novel??) and plan to delve into "Pasadena" very soon. Can't wait!
