IN MY FATHER’S HOUSE by E. Lynn Harris

    Amazon Rating: 4 stars
    Total Eclipse: 3.5

    Bentley Dean

IN MY FATHER’S HOUSE by E. Lynn Harris is about Bentley L. Dean, owner of one of the hottest modeling agencies in Miami, FL. Hailing from Detroit, Michigan, from a wealthy family, he could have had the world at his fingertips. Bentley, was engaged to a beautiful woman that adored him, but Bentley felt he was living a lie. He was in love with someone else…a man. When Bentley “came out” he was disowned by his father. Haunted by the hurt he inflicted on his father he flees to Miami to make a name for himself, without the backing of his father.

Bentley has literally been struggling to make ends meet. With the economy the way it is, it has been affecting business and with the bills rolling in he is desperate to get some business generated. That is until an opportunity walks through the door, offering him a lucrative deal, that deep down he knows is just “too good to be true.” Desperation will make you overlook certain things though.

IN MY FATHER’S HOUSE by E. Lynn Harris is one of several of his novels that he was working on right before his untimely death. It is a story of love, forgiveness, lies and deceit. Apparently, this is one of the first in this series. IN MY FATHER’S HOUSE was a quick, entertaining read. I hope we will get the chance to read more of this series.

    Strapped

    by Al-Saadiq Banks
    • Rated 5 stars

Strapped by Al-Saadiq Banks is the story of Amber Jones aka Lil Bit. Growing up Lil’Bit faced the devil in form of her step-father, fighting off his sexual abuse, messed her up emotionally when it comes to dealing with men. Not being able to take the abuse anymore she decides to run away.

When she meets Maurice whom is: her mentor, lover, friend and business associate; he takes her under her wing and schools her on the lessons of the game.
Maurice being the head of the Federation, is a notorious drug dealer, who trusts Lil Bit unlike anyone else. Unfortunately, although Maurice spoils her and would do anything for her, the one thing he can’t give her, she looks to from someone else.

Enter Samad, a low-level drug dealer. Something about Samad’s swagger attracts Lil Bit and she starts catching feelings for him, when the unexpected happens. Lil Bit is at a crossroads trying to figure out what the right thing to do versus the wrong thing. Either decision may ultimately cost her, her life.

So she decides to put a plan together…she decides to teach Samad how to take the game to a whole other level. A level that he has never played on before. With more money than he has ever had starts rolling in, Samad becomes cocky and it may be just too much for Samad to deal with.

When Maurice gets wind of Lil Bit keeping secrets, his one rule that he taught her not to do, not to mix the emotional with business, he decides break. He in turn lets his emotions run the show and in turn effects their business relationship but may ultimately cost someone their life.

I have to say I have been patiently waiting for Al-Saadiq Banks to drop Strapped. I was not disappointed. Mr. Banks came with yet another original True2Life joint. He definitely captured the emotions of the female psyche, to the point you kind of forget this is written by a man. He delves so deep into her emotions its uncanny. Like the pieces in a puzzle each character was placed to interlock making the bigger picture come into focus. Therefore making one hell of a read, considering there are so many different twists and turns, that will leave your mouth literally hanging open at the end.

If you are not familiar with Mr. Banks previous works you don’t know what you are missing. Each and every one of his novels is a 5 star read. He is “the” hottest street-lit author who has his own unique style. My final rating, (as if you didn’t know) for Strapped is 5 stars!!!!!

Jamal and Jouhonne Turner are two brothers that are physically as well as mentally abused by their father when they were younger. When tragedy strikes the two brothers, Jouhonne at the age of 15, is sentenced to 10yrs in prison for the death of his father. After serving the full 10yrs, he is green when it comes to women and drugs. Although Jamal is one of the biggest drug dealers in TX, he has managed to funnel the drug money into legitimate businesses. The thing is will he be able to hold on to all of this, because there is a snake within the crew and everyone is suspect.

This is a story of drugs, murder, and the love of their women. This was a definite page turner. I look forward to reading more by this author

A very entertaining read--laugh out loud type book. I'm biased because Bernice McFadden aka Geneva Holliday is my favorite author but take my word anything she writes is a 5 star read.

Joseph Hooks is a private detective investigating a 23yr old murder, of a 12yr old boy who was accused and found guilty of killing his father with a butcher knife. The thing is that, that 12yr old boy is really a grown Joseph Hooks. He has no recollection of the events leading up to that day or after--he has absolutely no memory of that day. He needs to find out if in fact he was the one that murdered his own father, but in searching for the truth, nobody seems to want pandoras box opened. Bodies start to drop, people are threatening him and his family, making him even more determined to find out the truth on that fatal day 23yrs ago. Will the truth cost him and his family their lives though?

I haven't read a good mystery like that in a long time. D.K. Gaston has a little of the supernatural mixed in making it that more interesting. With everyone seeming to have a motive, you will be guessing until the very end....who done it and why. I look forward to reading more from this author. If you are looking for a good mystery and you like authors such as James Patterson, well you will love D.K. Gaston.

This is the BEST summer read........the characters are so raw and real, like a fly on the wall I watched these ladies stories unfold, and it was like watch the black version of Desperate Housewives. If you haven't read this or the first one Desperate Hoodwives...you don't know what you are missing!
