Carol D

Currently, I am an English professor working at the local Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCU) here in Charlotte, North Carolina. I am a native of Norfolk, Virginia and pretty much love where I come from and what I do. Reading use to be one of my very favorite things to do, but I seem to work more than I can read.

I'm still struggling through it, but I've decided to consort with some secondary sources to understand it a little better.

Not my favorite Morrison novel, but oh so interesting.

My son gave me this book as a present, last year. I started reading it but have not finished. What I found most interesting about the first few chapters was the universal (even Biblical) idea of "as a man thinkth..." Our minds are more powerful than we give them credit for. I think to much credit is given to the heart and not enough to the head.

After approximately 4 re-reads of Beloved, it took me to grad school at Penn State that I even recognized the sexual interchange between sethe and the grave digger (page 7). I find it amazing how Morrison can write about sexual acts without offending even the most modest reader. She does it again when she writes about the "bit of foreskin" that Paul D. must take to survive while imprisoned. Morrison is a phenomenal writer.

  • The Five Love Languages

My cousin gave me this book as a gift, after she read it and found out which Love Language she fitted in. I have also read it and found it quite eye opening. I have suggested that my male friend reads it so that he will know more about what I like and even tell me which Love Language he fits in. I find that is also a book that you can revisit at any time.

I first read The Bluest Eye when I was a student in college and found it to be quite fascinating. Later, I have had the privilege of teaching this text to my upper level students who have somehow not always been able to grasp all of the themes of the text.
