I was born and raised in northern WI and made my way to AK in 1996. My husband Dave and I have a beautiful son, Garrett. I've been a part of the same book club for 13 years now. Five friends and I get together monthly - well, almost monthly - to talk about books and share our lives. It's great fun and renews my passion for reading each time we... more »

I read extremely loud and incredibly close. I really enjoyed it! What was picking cotton about?

If you liked the inkheart series, I am thinking you might like "the magic of Reason". It was pretty cool and very original!

Great to hear from you!! So glad your son is adjusting well to school. It sure makes leaving them a little easire that way. I have not been reading too much, by my standards but still reading quite a bit as I can. You can check my shelf for some ideas. I have read the inkheart series and absolutely loved them!!! I know you will enjoy all of them, also. Rain is doing okay, but really hates Fairbanks!! So when she and Patrick come home this summer, it will be for good. They will go to UAA, Anchorage. I am really glad, because that Fairbanks campus is really messed up. So many mistakes and problems with administration and classes and instructors up there. I think they think they are something special, when really they are big fish in a very small pond!! At any rate, I will be happy to have them both here. We have set up a small living space in the daylight basement and they will have to get jobs to pay for their gasoline and "extras". They will "tough it out" for the next 14 weeks and then not have to worry about it anymore. Rain has changed her major to sociology and is fast becoming an advocate of women's rights. Maybe law school?? who knows. I just wait out time. My mother-in-law is doing okay living with us, but must be attended constantly, so I am a bit scrunched for time. We started her in adult daycare at the Senior Center in Chugiak M-W-F, and she seems to be adapting well, though, I know she would rather not go. We just can't stand to see her sit in her chair in the living room all day and do nothing; so this seemed like the best option for now. She has become a little more talkative on those days. So maybe it will help. Enjoy the last dregs of winter and the lengthening daylight! Best wishes to you and your family for a great New Year filled with peace, health, and happiness!

    Hi Lori!

Cannot believe it has been four months since we talked. So sorry. Much has happened. Rain is contentedly if not grumpily in school in Fairbanks and braving the weather and temperatures there. She is doing well in school, and I really, really miss her, but she is coming home this weekend for a short visit and also so I can meet her new boyfriend???!!!! I am really excited to see her. Glad you got to have some time with your mom. My mom died in 1995 and I miss her every day! My mom in law had a stroke in washington. She did not do well in nursing home there so we brought her to alaska. She was dwindling in the nursing home here also, so she is now at the house, and that is my new main job. My house has chairlifts, and grasping bars all over. Oh well... such is life. She is sweet and 90 years old. A bit off in the memory department so needs careful watching. Otherwise, she is no problem. Take care and enjoy your family.

Hi Lori!! How are you?? You've got me wanting three new books: dogs of babel, blindness and searching for porcupines... Like I haven't got enough books to read!! But that's a good thing. I suspect I will be reading many more after Rain leaves in August. I love looking at your shelf! Take care, Louise

Hi, Lori! Got your note. Yes - I read that book quite a few years back. It was intriguing and very emotional! I'm not a big fan of his work, but I loved that book. I have not read the solitude book. I have read a bunch of others, you can see them on my shelf. I, unfortunately, do not have a lot of time (lazy!!) to right reviews on everything I read, but I do not think there is anything on my shelf that did not connect in some way for me. I love to read, anything and everything. Perhaps you would like Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close - Foer (or something like that).

Spring has sprung here. The trees "leafed" two days ago. So all the allergies are in the state are in full swing. :) Nice that you are having company. Enjoy them! I don't usually get any up here even though I have been in Alaska for 25 years. Oh well! Yes, Rain heads off for college in the fall. She had her 18th b-day on the 6th. So sad!! My work is almost done - for that truly was my real job! An enjoyable one. She has my heart and my soul. Perhaps in 4-6 more years she will be ready for the world. One can only hope. Take Care!

Thanks for your invite. I accept it graciously! I'm afraid after all this time, I still cannot maneuver very easily around this thing! Do you work in Juneau outside the home? Are you planning on staying there for as long as you can imagine?? It's so nice to know that there are alaskans on this thing. I will have to look at your friends page. I get very lonely here. The Anchorage area is a pretty transient place and Bethel was even worse. All the good friends I have made in the 20+ years I have been here have come and gone. It's so hard to keep "losing" good friends. Oh, well. I call it the land of Oz, because people seem to come and go so quickly here!!! :) Nice to meet you, Lori!

Hi, I was browsing the site for someone close by. The closest was you. I live in Eagle River. Have been in Alaska since 1984. I first lived in Bethel for 7 years, then got married and moved to Anchorage for a little over one year, and then out to Eagle River. I was born in Massachusetts and moved to Rhode Island when I was 9 months old. I lived in RI until I went to Bethel, AK in 1984. I have been here ever since. In all my time here, I have never been to Juneau! I'm afraid to fly in and out of there!! Ha! Take care.

Dear Lori: I’m an author from Massachusetts. My debut novel HUNTING THE KING was published in April. It has received high praise from Booklist, ForeWord Magazine and the Midwest Review. If you enjoy reading a good thriller, you may well like HUNTING. The story revolves around a charismatic young woman named Molly O’Dwyer. Molly was five years old when she witnessed her mother's death in a fire. She never knew her father. After her mother's death, she was raised on the campus of a Jesuit college in Boston. Now an archaeologist, she is recruited to participate on a dig in war torn Iraq. As a scientist she is compelled to know who or what is buried under the sands of ancient Babylon. As a loyal Catholic, she is scared that what she finds may have devastating consequences for her faith. There is an awesome YouTube book trailer well worth watching to give you an idea of the power of the book. Thanks.

    Hey Lori,

I don't typically read vampire books, but I loved the Twilight series. I couldn't put the first three books down and it is definitely the hot, young adult series. Of course, all of us Twilight fans are waiting for the movie, due out this month. It's actually a love story that happens to involve vampires and werewolves. It's not exactly deep reading, but it's fun and I think you'll enjoy it.
