Bryan D

I'm an avid reader who has spent many years reading mostly literature. In the last two years, I have dove head first into science fiction. Since I have a M.S. in marine biology, I tend to be able to follow and understand even the more technical sci-fi books. I like to own my books and enjoy finding out of print novels at used book stores. As... more »

I figured as much. I liked it. If I were in the market for a tat I'd definitely consider something having to do with HST or Vonnegut. Life just isn't the same without them. Impossible shoes to fill...

Hi, Bryan. I was wondering if you've seen documentary by Alex Gibney on HST called Gonzo? I'm guessing you have. If so, what did you think?

I haven't gotten around to Pride and Prejudice and Zombies yet. Can't wait though! I recently started back at grad school and that really cuts into my reading time. Is Dostoevsky easy to get into? I hear mixed reviews!

I also miss the Midwest. It's an entirely differently atmosphere in the city

Hi Bryan. I'm afraid i am not familiar with the authors you mentioned. But am interested to read their books. I'd really appreciate it if you can recommend some of the good ones you mentioned. Just in case I shift to the sci fi genre, I'll owe it to you. :-)

And yes, am interested to join your club.

    Thanks!

Thanks for all the recommendations, I'll have to check those all out.

Ha, thanks. I haven't read 1984 but it's def on my never-ending, extremely long list of books to read. I never really plan out what I'm going to read next. There is this AWESOME used book store in my town called Recycled. I usually just go there and see what I can find, usually for only about $2 - $4 a book. I'll see what I can find there this week :)

Thanks again for all your help. Happy Halloween!

Oh, Bryn thanks for you suggestion. I have this copy of The Idiot that I am not sure if it's new or is worth reading the version. It's been translated by 2 different translators. It's not accessible for me to buy the latest translation at the moment so I think I am going to read this one anyways. I was skeptical whether to read the book or not but with your descriptions I think I'll start reading it soon! :) Thanks!

Hey no worries. I seem to be adding more and more to my unread book shelf as well, I just got around to George R.R. Martin's series so i'm making my rounds.
Well when you do go to pick up her books I would say start with the very beginning of her Pern novels. Dragonflight, Dragonquest and the White Dragon are the first three I would start with followed by the Harper Hall Trilogy Dragonsong, Dragonsinger, and Dragondrums, which were the first three i picked up. They are very easy reading and it's been a while but they are good books.
If you want to not go too much into the fantasy (they do push towards sci-fi throughout the series though) she does have a good series The Tower and the Hive the first book is the Rowan.

Wow, I didn't even realize there were so many others. Any time I would try to find more books by him I would always get stuck after Amber and Lord of Light. I'll go on a more in depth search for the others the next time I get the chance. Thanks a lot.

ps. Any you would recommend for me to start with?

Thanks for your recommendation of 'Jonathan Strange & Mr Norrell'. I borrowed it from a friend who could not get into it and it's been sitting in my 'maybe' pile for ages. Might now get bumped up the list :-)

I'll try to read one of those...I'm just really busy with school. Ugh. I miss the ample reading time that summer provided.
