I'm an avid reader who has spent many years reading mostly literature. In the last two years, I have dove head first into science fiction. Since I have a M.S. in marine biology, I tend to be able to follow and understand even the more technical sci-fi books. I like to own my books and enjoy finding out of print novels at used book stores. As...more »

The Crucible, which I was required to read for summer homework, is written by Arthur Miller. It is written in play form and was performed at the Martin Beck Theater in NY on January 22, 1953. This is according to the Cast List at the back of the book...It is an account of the Salem Witch-Hunts. The entir esituation is ridiculous! Those people were motivated by such base emotions! And the answers were right in front of them the entire time! One of my friends actually had to walk away from the book for a little while. It was probably a very arousing play! Anyways, it is worth reading and if you have the oppoutunity, I would like to know your opinion...it's probably at a local library. Thanks for this opportunity to vent a little. Have a great day!

Hey Brian. I just read your response on Jonathan Strange. Since you recommend Ursula Le Guin and Lois McMaster Bujold, any titles you think I should start with?

Thank you for the friend thing, you're right, it will be easier for me to ask questions...be warned, I have a never-ending supply of questions! Thanks for being such a good sport! Happy Reading! (By the way, 800 books?!? Wow! Do you live in a library? Just kidding. I thought that I had quite a collection, but apparently not. That is awesome.)

Hey man, thanks for the rec on the Kafka book. I really enjoy reading books that are truly unique. I am currently wading through Mark Z. Danielewski's epic House of Leaves. It is definitely the strangest book I have ever read, and I love it. The book is told by a narrator who found a book written by an old blind man about a documentary that doesn't exist. It is truly bizarre, with vertical fake footnotes, footnotes that last 2-3 pages, pages with 2 or 3 words on them, and many other neat literary tricks. You should definitely check it out.

In return I recommend Black Easter it is one of his best stories, the idea of ritual magic as practiced in medieval times being used to release a collection of demons from hell on the equivalent of a free form art experiment by an artist in evil is stunning.

I just wanted to wave hello to a kindred spirit. Sometimes it seems like all the readers I speak to either keep their libraries pared down to practically nothing but the three books they haven't read, or are religious about only purchasing new books once they've read everything in the house. I've always been a collector. If a story catches my eye, it goes home with me, even if I have a back log of books and can't get to it until a year later. Its nice to know I'm not alone in that trait. :)
