Have you seen Barbara Kingsolver's new book? The special ed teacher I work with agrees that the Bean Tree might be a good book for the students.Also, I am looking into Finn, as in Huckleberry.
I agree with you, the topic of Black Dogs is very intriguing but the book was a bit of a let down. McEwan has done better
