Kim M

I'm a mother of 3 so I don't have nearly as much time to read as I'd like. Someday....

Rating the books is proving to be difficult for me. It is so hard to compare apples w/ oranges. So, I will just rate the ones that made the biggest impressions on me. I might give something five stars even if maybe the writing wasn't superb but bc...more »

    Wasn't THE GIRLS different and
haunting, Kim? I really liked it and think about it often. It read more like
    non-fiction than fiction!
I just finished Edgar Sawtelle, but it
lacked something. For one thing it was
such a thick book---hard to hold up and
read while in bed. It was frustratingly
slow, I thought, but had quite the bomb-shell of an ending.
    Hey--- miss ya.

Yes, Pig Boy. I've requested it and hope it'll come in before
our trip to Seattle. I'm going to need LOTS of novels to see
me through the time we'll spend driving to Washington!
Heavens. When we traveled with Iris and Vicki years ago, I
ran out of novels... I was reduced to buying Nora Roberts and
    Time Magazines.

We're off to Ruth's retirement party tonight and I've made not
one, not two, but three kinds of cookies for the occasion.
Too bad I always look forward to the DESSERTS at parties
    rather than the veggie platters....

We got Ruth two of her favorite things: a bottle of wine, and
    a border collie book!

    Later,

Now THAT is an interesting title, Kim! I see you rated
it fairly highly.... I think I'll try it just for the title alone.

Right now I'm reading Olive Kitteridge by Elizabeth Strout. I
don't think I'll put it on my "favorites" shelf, but it's okay. Do
you ever run across a book that is so uneven that you LOVE
parts of it, but are bored with other parts? Not good.

    It's 3 a.m, I can't sleep. I'll try reading Kitteridge again and
maybe the boring parts will put me back to sleep.

    Take care,

I'm going to allow myself to buy (rather than check out) another Christopher Moore book this month - I gotta stop buying books!
I saw that you just put up Practical Demonkeeping, Island of the Sequined Love Nun, and Lust Lizard. Which one should I buy?

Wow, big tattoo. How long did that one take? Did you do it all in one session? Did it scab over pretty badly? I have the two you see in my picture and two more on my other arm and that's it for now, but I'll probably get more at some point. I'm halfway done with this big series I'm reading, 7.66 books of 14 done, so I guess I cracked the halfway point. I just picked up the new Raconteurs album and I love it, it's called "Consolers of the Lonely". Check it out if your into that type of music. Later, Bryan.

So your mom must not have read "In Cold Blood" since she got spooked by the movie, huh? I'm gonna put that movie on my Netflix list and see how it compares. Yes, Vonnegut has a unique style. All but one of his books have many elements of this style. The closest one that can be considered a normal story is probably his first novel, "Player Piano" which is something along the lines of "Brave New World" and "1984", two novels you've hopefully read. If not, you must read them, along with Arthur C. Clarke's "Childhood's End" and Robert Heinlein's "Stranger in a Strange Land". Once you get used to Vonnegut's style, you'll probably grow to love him, his books are satirical and dark and written in a simple language, but he says alot in his simplicity. Stick with it. One of his books, "Breakfast of Champions" even has alot of poorly drawn illustrations by the author. Mr. Rosewater appears in a few other Vonnegut books, but just not as the main character. As for Chritopher Moore. I've read "A Dirty Job" and thought it was hilarious and I loved it, so I've bought almost all his books (missing two or three) and I hear "Lamb" is one of his best, so my next Moore one is either that one or "Bloodsucking Fiends". Once it's sequel "You Suck" comes out in paperback, I'm gonna pick that one up too. As for the Thomas Covenent trilogy. I read the origional trilogy in high school, so like 12 to 13 years ago and liked it. I now own better copies of it and plan to reread it at some point cause I picked up the second trilogy of Thomas Covenent too! I have not read the "Harry Potter" series yet. I have over 500 unread books here, so I got alot of reading to do. Have you ever read "The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy" series? Those are probably the all-time funniest books ever written, except for book 4, which lacked, but the last one, book 5, "Mostly Harmless" was quite funny. You can get the whole series in one paperback/hardcover for a good price, so please check that one out. Another really funny writer is Terry Pratchett, who writes these humorous fantasy books called the Discworld Series. All the books take place on the planet of Discworld and satarize certain elements of our society. I own 30 books in the series and am going slowly through them in the order they were writen. My next one is "Moving Pictures", book 10. Some of the books involve this clumsy Wizard named Rincewind, some feature this group of witches, some feature Death as the main character, some feature the City Watch and some are just stand alone novels. Type in Discworld Order into google and go to the wikapedia entry, it has some good info about each book and what it satarizes. Ok, I'll talk to you later, Bryan.

Hey Kim, have you got into any Vonnegut yet? He's one of my all-time favorite writers and I own about all his books, even the ones that are just a bunch of essays. He's kinda in a class of his own, I mean, how do you catagorize him. I'm reading a huge series by Lois Mcmaster Bujold right now and it's like 14 books long, and I just started book five. So far, so good. I also just read "In Cold Blood" by Capote. Have you read that one before. What a book, it was excellent and much better that i thought it would be. Ok, talk to you soon, Bryan.

I think I did it, added some books on "my shelf"!
What fun. Sooo many books, so little time.
How do I get to that feature you showed me the other day, the
thing where it shows me who ELSE has read the same books I've read?

Thanks for the note! I love Vonnegut and once I started reading his books, I couldn't stop. I feel that way about Christopher Moore, too. I think that your opinion of Vonnegut is shaped by the first couple you read. I started with Breakfast of Champions and God Bless You, Mr. Rosewater. They have reoccuring characters, like Moore's books and those two introduce you to the best ones! Good Luck! I'm so excited about this site - so far it's been great!
