Maryellen P

I'm an American living and teaching overseas. I have been a reader my whole life and still have shelves of new books to read! I also have a nice little collection of old books, particularly children's schoolbooks.

Hey Maryellen! It's told by a 9 year old boy named Bruno whose father is in the SS and head of Auschwitz (sp?) Very interesting when told by his perspective as he has no clue what is going on. Ending was unbelievable - would love it if you read it and let me know your thoughts.

Hey Maryellen - Madonna here! Have you read The Boy in the Striped Pajamas by John Boyne? I can't get it out of my mind. Try it!

Hey Maryellen! Thanks for the note. I actually made a boo-boo and clicked I had read "Plum Wine", but I have to order it first. I am excited about reading it though. There are a couple of books based on my family. One was written by my Uncle Burke and another by his son.(Same name) The one by Little Burke was loosely based on my grandmother. The subject matter created some bad feelings in the family. The name of it is "Dwelling Places". The other book written by Uncle Burke is based on my grandfather's life and stories he told to my uncle. The name of that one is "Summerland".

Woo hoo, I started reading Exodus today!
Is Things Fall Apart depressing? If so, I'm not sure I could handle it right now. I'm already upset over Africa.

Thanks for the comment on A Thousand Splendid Suns; I hope I enjoy it as much as Kite Runner. I'm sure I will. I also noticed that you plan to read Pillars of the Earth. I read that when it first came out and it is magnificent in its detail on the building of the cathedrals and the life of the workers. Sue J

I loved Eat Pray Love--one of the best I've read in a long time. I want to read 1000 Suns as you said it is good.
