I'm a teacher, a mother, a daughter and forever a student. I love to lose myself in a book, it can be any genre. With every book a little something is always taken from it, a lesson learned, a meaning captured and related to what is happening, or has happened in my life. I also love to cook and I have a tendency to spend countless hours looking... more »

I attended Project Mastery--individualizing the curriculum for students with moderate to severe disabilities and I loved it. I have learned so much. If you visit the University of North Carolina Charlotte's website you can find information about Project Mastery. I have all of the tools from the training and I would be very willing to share them with you--I think you would be successful at using them with your three students with disabilities while still working with your other students (it's pretty easy). I have adapted a lot of my materials and used a lot of picture flashcards. You can purchase picture materials if you go to the attainment company (you can visit it online)....if you don't have time to make your own materials. Let me know and I will be glad to share materials!! That's what teachers do. :)
My year has gone well so far. I even made it through state SPED review. Whew! I can breathe now.

How is your school year going? Ours has gone so fast. I can't believe we are facing Thanksgiving already! What kinds of books are you reading with your students?

yeah it is really hard to find the time to just sit down and read. the most time is on the weekends but i find that how long it takes me varies- if i have a lot of work to do then i don't have that much time, and if the book is losing my interest it takes me much longer to finish. With Dan Brown's novels i find that its really easy to burn through it, but after a while i can feel strain on my eyes so i have to take a break. I m not really one of those people that can read uber fast but i can finish a book pretty quick if im really interested. i dont like the way that some people think that if u read really fast then ur a good reader because it doesnt matter if u take longer as long as you enjoy it :)

    Greetings CROAH member!

We are now accepting nominations for the next group read to cover the fourth US President, James Madison.

Please send your suggestions via one of 2 ways:

    a) a private note to either Regina or Dog Lover (this method reveals your email address to us), or

    b) use the "Questions About this Group" text box found on the member's tab. This sends an email to both administrators and masks your email address.

Please do NOT post your nomination to the site's discussion tab.

Please include the title, author, and brief description of the book. It would also be nice if you included the Shelfari book page URL.

Nominations will be accepted through the 18th. Nominations will be posted and voting will take place through the 25th. We will post the selected book on the 26th.

Because we are approaching the Holidays a revised schedule will be followed for the remainder of 2009 and beginning of 2010. We will vote for the Madison read in October, post discussion questions in November, skip December, vote on Monroe reads in January, and post discussion questions in February.

A suggestion has been made to continue the extended reading schedule past the Holidays and provide 2 months between book selections. We would be interested in hearing anyone's thoughts on this. Would it help you? Would you lose momentum? Are you too busy to participate on the current schedule.

Please post your comments on this proposed scheduling change to the nomination thread found at http://www.shelfari.com/groups/34700/discussions/146618/James-Madison-Nominations-are-Open

The four books we've chosen since the group started have been fabulous. We look forward to seeing the nominations for the fifth.

    Thanks,

    Regina & DL

Hi Olympia- thanks for writing. I finished War and Peace in early July and really liked it- it did take a lot of hard work and dedication to get through. Presently I am reading South of Broad- a new novel by Pat Conroy, who is one of my favorites. I plan to tackle Les Miserables by Victor Hugo next- wish me luck. I am really glad the weather is starting to cool off so that I can read some outside- it is very hot here during the summer....let me know what you are reading. take care. Jason R.

    Hey Olympia,

    How goes it?

Just started school this week and the body is exhausted but the mind is racing – overall it feels terrific to be back in the classroom.

This summer my latest book was released – “Roam Italy: A Teacher and His Students Take the Ultimate Class Trip.” The book’s website is www.theclassroombook.com if you wanted to check things out.

Possible tornado warnings in NJ this weekend so I best head for cover…

You'll find the ballot at http://www.shelfari.com/groups/34700/discussions/137240/Vote-for-Thomas-Jefferson-Reads---September-2009

    This is a "ballot" therefore...

    Please vote only once.

Please indicate only a vote "for" - do not vote against a title.

Please do not include any sales talk or justification for your vote - just "yae" or "for".

The last 3 reads have been just fabulous. With this range of nominations, it looks as though we'll have another winner for our 4th group read!

Thanks so much to all of you who submitted nominations - great job!

    Lookin' forward to your votes,

Hi, Olympia. I'm reading The Book Thief now and I'm about a hundred pages in. I'm certain Death is the narrator. I'm really enjoying the book. It just seems to get better every page. Have you read any of his other books?

I just finished yesterday, have a week off and then I'm back for ESY for July. I hope you have a great summer too, and enjoy Portugal and spending time with your father. I give you a lot of credit for working with that age group, I used to run a day camp for 4 and 5 year olds... it is exhausting!

I just saw your post, sorry I didn't get back to you sooner. I hope you do try to discover some new author's this summer, I will warn you thought, it's usually a good idea to get 2 or 3 books at a time when you do this, because I have also picked up some really bad books this way too. What ages do you teach? I wonder if we can trade lesson ideas?

We have two more days of school. We don't have school tomorrow because of our track meet (it takes a lot of students and teachers out of our small school, so we just don't have school). We have school on Wed. and Thurs. and then we are on summer vacation! I am really excited to get to go to Iowa and visit my family. My sister had a baby and I haven't gotten to meet him, yet. She named him Castor Hawk. Interesting!
