ALL CLEAR continues where BLACK OUT left off, with an intrepid team of time traveling historians trapped in the past. The driving question of the story is, will they get home? Have their “drops” back to the future closed because they’ve changed history for the worse? Or are they meant to be where they are to ensure the correct timeline? What role do they play during this difficult time in history?

The story jumps between viewpoints and time periods, although it’s still England in WWII. The vivid details of the Blitz stick in your mind and make you restless as you read about what the people of London experienced. How did they survive the constant anxiety from interrupted sleep, trips to shelters that might be destroyed, nightly bombings, threats of death and injury, hazardous rubble, fires, and more? No wonder they sent their children to the countryside for safety. You have to admire their courage, their optimistic attitude, and their steadfastness during this unsettled time. Thousands died before they knew the outcome would be a positive one. Secret plots to trick the German leaders with disinformation are also part of the story. You’ll learn more about the Londoners during the war than you’ve ever known and will experience it through the eyes of three sympathetic heroes.

I love Connie Willis’s gripping historical tales and will look for more from this talented author.

Connie Willis writes wonderful stories about historians from the future who travel into the past. This time, they've landed in London during the WWII Blitz. It's a fascinating glimpse into this microcosm of history, and you won’t want to put the book down. You know something will go wrong from the moment these characters land in the past, and you can't wait for them to realize it. They face a universal fear, to be trapped in a place far from home, to possibly never see anyone you know again. And while engrossed in this story, you're learning about the toll the frequent bombings took on the citizens of London. Be warned, though, that you’ll want to read ALL CLEAR as soon as you finish this story.

Beatrice Poole, a widow and secretly the author of romantic “horrid” novels, contacts Lord Leo Drake to assist her in locating a valuable relic. The “Mad Monk of Moncrest”, as he is nicknamed, is known for his antiquities studies. Thrilled when he accepts her challenge, she wonders if she’ll be able to focus when his seductive manner distracts her.

Engaged by the woman’s forthright attitude, Leo has reasons of his own for agreeing to his scheme. Little does he know that his heart will be at risk along with his life, as the stakes rise and various people they’ve contacted end up dead. Will he be able to protect the headstrong woman while guarding his heart?

An intriguing mystery and a classic romance combine to make this a quick read.

Unfortunately, she has to kiss a lot of frogs before she meets her prince. What she thinks she wants—a guy who is rich, steadfast, and who will take care of her—isn’t necessarily what fate has in store. She has to learn more about herself before she can cast aside her illusions and find true love. South Beach Cinderella is a hilarious contemporary story about searching for love in all the wrong places.

This third installment in Rhys Bowen’s historical A Royal Spyness series is as charming as the rest. Lady Georgiana, a relation of the royals, heads to her family estate and country home, Castle Rannoch, at the urging of Scotland Yard to search for an assassin bent on eliminating members of the royal family. Accidents abound as the mystery deepens and a house party of guests contribute to the confusion. One of these eccentric characters may be a murderer and responsible for the mishap in the woods that nearly cost Georgiana’s brother his foot. When one guest ends up shot to death during a hunt, it doesn’t appear to be an accident at all. Will Georgiana learn everyone’s secrets and unmask the killer before she’s next on his hit list? This historical cozy mystery is a delightful addition to Bowen's entertaining series.

The people of Bandakar believe violence is abhorrent no matter their situation. So when Imperial Order soldiers invade their land to murder, rape, and enslave them, they do nothing to resist. They wait for Richard Rahl, Seeker of Truth, who is prophesied to be both their destroyer and their redeemer. But not content to rely on Richard’s cooperation, they poison him, thus forcing him to come to their land to seek the antidote.

Richard’s magic is failing him too, and it’s a race as to which plight will kill him first. Besides the poison and his gift that are derailing him, he also has to dodge the assassins of Emperor Jagang plus the evil soul stealer, Nicholas the Slide. But worse is their intent to capture the Mother Confessor, his wife and beloved Kahlan. Will he prevail to save them all? And if he succeeds, will he die at the moment of triumph?

While political lessons are inherent in this story, the action is gripping and the characters compelling. I’m ready to start the next book in this engrossing series.

  • Murder Is Binding
    • Rated 5 stars

Tricia Miles operates a mystery bookstore in a small New Hampshire town where she doesn’t expect to find the cookbook store owner dead next door. Who might have wanted to harm the poor dear? Her sister, recently come to town? The local politician or the real estate agent? Or maybe the building’s owner looking for a higher rent tenant? When the sheriff suspects her, Tricia has to find the killer before someone else ends up stiff as a page in an old book.

This latest installment in the Booktown Mysteries is as delightful as the others. I kept guessing who might be guilty until the exciting end. It has a great puzzle, interesting characters, and a perfectly cozy bookstore setting. I’ll be looking for the next book in this charming series.
