I have loved to read for as long as I can remember, starting with The Wednesday Witch by Ruth Chew in early grade school, to the entire Judy Blume collection in Jr High (practically a requirement for all girls in the late 1970's, early 1980's, along with having feathered hair and using Gee Your Hair Smells Terrific shampoo!). I continue to love... more »

  • The Third Circle
    • Rated 4 stars

Set in late Victorian era England, this paranormal romantic suspense centers around crystal worker Leona Hewitt and her quest to reclaim the powerful Aurora Stone, a crystal which had been stolen from her mother eleven years ago. While in the process of reclaiming her family's heirloom, Leona comes across Arcane Society hypnotist Thaddeus Ware, who is also after the elusive crystal, as the Arcane Society feels the crystal belongs to them. Leona and Thaddeus have great chemistry and decide to work together, as danger surrounds them in the forms of the Midnight Monster and the mysterious Third Circle organization, as they all try to hunt down the powerful crystal for different reasons.

Costume shop owner Raine Tallentyre hears voices that remain at crime scenes, a sort of psychic residue left over from the past. She uses this gift to help solve crimes; however, when she tries to explain what she truly hears, people tend to think she's crazy. That is until she meets Zack Jones, a private detective who is a member of the Arcane Society, a secret organization of individuals with a variety of psychic abilities that study psychic phenomena. This is the same organization that destroyed Raine's father's career when she was a little girl, and who she also blames for his death. Needless to say, Raine is not exactly trusting of Zack when he contacts her for help in solving a crime. Zack's ability is similar to Raine's. He sees visions of previous crimes. When Raine becomes the next intended victim of a serial killer, she and Zack combine their abilities to track down the killer before it's too late.

Raine and Zack are both likable characters with great chemistry, making this a very good paranormal romantic suspense.

  • The Book of Tomorrow

Rich and spoiled 16 year old Tamara Goodwin's life is forever changed when her father dies unexpectedly, leaving Tamara and her mom with nothing but a huge mountain of debt, forcing them to move in with Tamara's odd aunt and uncle in the country. While visiting a traveling library, Tamara comes across an unusual diary, one that appears to have her next day's entry already written in it, before the day's events have actually taken place. Tamara now needs to make a choice, to decide how to use her new found knowledge of what each tomorrow will bring.

This was a fun and entertaining read, with a bit of mystery and suspense as well, as Tamara tries to discover why her aunt is so secretive, and what is really going on at the house across the street.

This suspense filled page turner alternates chapter to chapter between two time frames and perspectives: 35 year old Phoebe in present day, and 12 year old Lisa fifteen years ago, both in small town Vermont. Fifteen years ago, Sam's older sister Lisa walked into the woods behind their house on a quest to find Teilo, the King of the Fairies, and never came back. Sam is now living with Phoebe, who has had visions of the Dark Man hiding in her bedroom since she was a child. When people and events from the past start to make their presence known once again, Phoebe begins to think that she and Lisa are somehow connected, and it's now up to her and Sam to find out the truth about what really happened to Lisa so many years ago.

Two local celebrity chefs, Gina Foxton and Tate Moody, compete on Eutaw Island, GA for a chance at their own national cooking show and fall in love in the process. I don't watch a lot of cooking shows myself, but I couldn't resist another Mary Kay Andrews book. I always love the southern setting and quirky characters. Example: every time Gina's mom leaves a message on Gina's voicemail, she states, "This is Mrs. Birdelle Foxton!", as if Gina wouldn't know who her mom was! And what about that name, Birdelle! Gotta love it!

  • The Thirteenth Tale
    • Rated 3 stars

This book moved at a very slow pace, although I found the second half to be more engrossing than the first. Reclusive, ailing author Vida Winter has decided to tell her life story to young biographer Margaret Lea. Both Vida and Margaret are haunted by ghosts of the past, and what might have been. Vida finds peace in finally revealing the truth of her strange childhood to Margaret, and Margaret comes to terms with her own past as well.

  • A Highlander for Christmas
    • Rated 4 stars

This is a fun, light Christmas romance with a bit of a paranormal twist involving a Scottish Highlander from 1745 brought back to life in present day Boston MA by unsuspecting antique shop owner Claire MacGregor. Claire has recently inherited a centuries old sword and scroll. After reading the scroll out loud, Highlander Cameron MacLeod appears in Claire's bedroom, assuming it is still 1745, and having no idea where he is. Of course Cam gets himself into trouble almost immediately, and with no one else to turn to, Claire comes to his rescue, as they then try to determine how to get Cam back home to his proper time and place.

Another fun romantic suspense from Amanda Quick, this one set in Regency era England. You can't help but laugh at the humorous dialogue between the independent and stubborn heroine, Lavinia Lake, and the hero, Tobias March, who cannot believe he is falling in love with someone as strong willed and minded as he himself is. As much as Lavinia and Tobias drive each other crazy, they can't seem to stay apart from one another for long, and soon decide to combine their forces to see who is at the root of a blackmailing scheme that is turning into something much more dangerous by the minute. I love a book that actually makes you laugh out loud as you are reading it!

  • Wait Until Midnight
    • Rated 5 stars

This romantic suspense, set in Victorian era England, is filled with humor and plenty of "startling incidents", as the very likable and strong heroine, sensation novelist Caroline Fordyce, becomes involved with a mysterious gentleman and a possible scandal that could reveal the past that Caroline has worked so hard to hide.

This book was very entertaining and a lot of fun to read!
