Oh yes, Mark liked the "Cranford" miniseries, which was actually made from three Gaskell novels: Cranford, "My Lady Ludlow" (which I read on line at UPenn's On-Line Books Page), and "Mr. Harrison's Confessions," which I have not been able to find. Did you watch the miniseries of Wives & Daughters? I"m pretty sure Netflix has it.

Whew, yes, you're right, there is a lot more going on in the novel than Boy Meets Girl, that's for sure. Well, I didn't even realize that Bridget Jones was Pride & Prejudice in spite of the huge clue of the name Mark Darcy! But that was because Bridget was such a total wuss (although I loved the book) no one could possibly mistake her for Elizabeth Bennet.

Andrea, we are now halfway through the film of North & South and my husband remarked as soon as Thornton & Margaret began sparring that it was just like Pride & Prejudice -- how did I miss that one while reading the novel?!?

Hi Andrea! I noticed that your bookshelf is a darker brown. How did you change that? I also just read The Hiding Place (by Corrie Ten Boom). It really was a good book! I saw you had just added it to your "planning to read" list.

After I finished North & South I started skimming through Gaskell's "Ruth" and it's not as much to my taste (bit of a tearjerker) but there are wonderful sentences like this: "He was a tall, large-boned, iron man; stern, powerful, and authoritative in appearance; dressed in clothes of the finest broadcloth, and scrupulously ill-made, as if to show that he was indifferent to all outward things."

Andrea, thanks for recommending North & South; I'm in the middle of it now and it's riveting. I'm looking forward to seeing the TV series to compare it (after reading and watching "Cranford").

Yes, Paige has one, but we have problems with her acct. I'm not sure why, but she always has a hard time accessing the acct. I'm not sure what her screen name is, but i will ask her. I know it is linked to my other email acct. katie.perry@att.net. Try looking her up using the email addy. It might work.

I thought the 13th Tale was kind of a strange book. I was not sure how to rate it. It was interesting, but just a little strange. It was implied that a brother and a sister had kind of an unnatural relationship in part of the book. Other than that, it was kind of interesting, in a weird kind of way. I just wasn't sure of how I felt about this book. Maybe I should have only given it two stars instead of three.

I love Anne Tyler, I believe I've read most of her books. Not everyone likes her style, but for some reason i really enjoy her. She writes about everyday subjects and makes them fun to read.

About the Memory Keepers Daughter... I didn't like the ending either. I didn't like the fact that David (the dad) died before telling his wife and son about Phoebe. It was a little frustrating. It definitely was not a "feel-good" type of book. It seemed unfair that the mom of the twins would never really get to have the closeness with her daughter Pheobe that she could have. Even after she had learned that Pheobe had not died at birth and was eventually reunited with her daughter, Pheobe still did not really recognize her as her mom (because it was Caroline, the nurse who had raised her). It was just kind of sad... and I agree that this book did not give much of a feeling of closure at the end.
