Joshua, "Tales of the Dying Earth" by Jack Vance is perhaps the quintessential collection of sci/fi fantasy/adventure stories ever written by one of the most revered and awarded authors to write in this genre. The words that come to mind when trying to describe his incredible achievement are: wondrous, magnificent, epic, spellbinding, dazzling, exquisite, inventive, wordsmithery, magical, elegant, enthralling, engrossing, imaginative, original, mellifluous pacing, atmospheric backdrops, transformational, fantastical storylines! I read the first story in this collection when i was 11 years old and the others in the ensuing years. Over the years I have read the collection over 20 times, each time reflecting on the joy it brings me and its life changing impact on my reading addiction. Just imagine being able to transform written words from your minds eye into life-like visions and you will then understand the sensual impact of Jack Vance's brilliance! Ironically, because of its unique qualities I have always been protective and therefore reluctant to expose this truly fabulous literary experience to others for fear of diminishing its value to me...a misguided supposition I know, but true never-the-less. So, if you want to take a journey into the unknown and wander through the beautiful worlds as penned by a master scribe then you will want to read this incredible collection of stories and revel in their beatific perfection. Storytelling at its best; a masterpiece...

I would like to suggest reading THE ENDLESS HOUR- The True Story of a Haunted Soul.I completed publication
    in November 2010.

Over eighteen years in the making,THE ENDLESS HOUR is about an illustration I created in 1988 that became
reality two years later, which involves a spiritual death experience.

This touching and terrifying true story is not only about me.It is also about... you.

For more information go to theendlesshour.com. Once you enter the website you can watch the book video and
read reviews. You may also want to visit amazon.com and read the first seven chapters of THE ENDLESS HOUR.

    Thanks,
    Jesse

Yeah, yeah :P Actually, I was... but then I misplaced it! I've since found it again & just haven't gotten around to re-starting it. I think I previously got to page 70 or so, which is a shame since it starts going *SO* well! Perhaps I've just found what I need to do over the weekend :)

I'm enjoying Sedaris. Hearing him read his own work with that deadpan delivery is making me laugh out loud in public places.

You know, I haven't read anything mind bowing in a long time. Short stories yes, but no novels. It's getting annoying.

    Re: Norton Anthology:
I like them too, but I send you notes all the time. The Veldt started me on Bradbury when I was in 5th or 6th grade. The Babysitter -- is that Coover? If so, then that too, was marvelous. Many of these I read at WashColl, you know? Flannery O'Connor is humbling. And I just re-read A&P a couple of months ago. Hey, are we the same person? Oh that's right, I didn't like The Dark Tower and haven't yet read Sot Weed. And you think Austen isn't romance.

They are mediocre. Funny in some parts, boring in others. They were quick, easy reads... which at the time (when I read them) was exactly what I needed. I regret that I haven't been keeping up with the show. The last episode I watched was when Jason & that girl addicted to vampire blood went & kidnapped the vamp that Lafayette had... visited... with.

I've no clue what has happened since, because the books and HBO series are SO different!

Just wanted to say that I agree with your opinion on Bleak House. I found the movie much more entertaining which just shouldn't be for a "great" book. I found it disjointed and a little confusing at first. Now I know that it wasn't just me.

Regarding your review for The Secret Life of Bees, I agree with you about the polarity in the characterization, but find that it is sometimes a comfort among women to see in a novel the world reflected in such absolutes. Because sometimes it really feels like all men are scum and all girls are great. While I normally steer clear of typically women's fiction, I loved Bees, especially on audio, and would recommend it strongly to all women readers.

I have been considering adding The Secret Life of Bees and The Story of Edgar Sawtelle to my reading list but seeing that you didn't particularly enjoy either one I might not. I am considering starting to add reviews on here... you have me feeling guilty!

Tks for your compliment. I love your reviews. You say in a few sentences what takes me paragraphs to convey. But that is just like us, isn't it?

Hello Josh. I actually have not read Tad Williams, but he is on my list of authors to read. I have a book that is filled with lists of authors and names of books that I want to read. It also includes books that I have read because I never remember the names of authors of the titles of the books. What Williams book would you suggest I read first?

No reviews from me... I tag them all so I can find titles fast when recommending books to patrons here at the library, but that plus the star ratining is probably as much as you will get from me unless I REALLY have a strong opinion about a title.

I read too much and enter information onto 3 different sites like this (its the nerdy librarian in me ... if only all my friends would use the same site) to review every title that I read. Please forgive me.
