Hello there! ~ As many of you know, I am a HUGE reader and practically devour every book I can - and WHEN I am able! I am the kind of person who will stop beside my kitchen door on the way out to work in the morning to just wrap up that 'one last page' or two in the chapter! Ha ha! I was grateful to be invited to this site by my friend Mary, as... more »

While at times an engrossing read, with some interesting historical speculation, I overall found this book rather insipid. Just when I was starting to get into it, I would hit a patch where I felt I was reading a potboiler in the vein of Danielle Steele or Victoria Holt. The novel dragged on way too long (the paperback is an astounding 660 pages) and much of the plot covering Anne's rise and descent from power could have been covered in much less and still achieved its desired sweeping affect. This is not a book I would recommend. Way too much of a waste of time.

A gripping, heartfelt, and thorough look at loss and mourning of a loved one. I wasn't sure if I would be hooked by this one, but surprisingly I was...

Really delightful 'fluff' read, especially if you are a Jane Austen fan. I really enjoyed escaping away into this book. The protagonist, Jane Hayes, is an absolute treat, and though her goal with her trip to 'Austenland' is to face up to her rabid Mr. Darcy fantasies and become a little more practical/realistic in the ways of meeting men, all of us readers who share that selfsame fantasy cannot help but root for her to find her Colin Firth dreamboat at last! Very engaging and funny at times.

An interesting novel about familial relationships, especially between women - bridging the time gap between revolutions and modern times. When all was said and done, I never felt a connection with any of the women while reading the book, though I felt it a decent first effort. The reader remains very distanced and the female protagonists do nothing to allow you to get a glimpse into their hurts and desires. As they are with each other, so they treat the reader - with a sad sense of remove and distrust. You will never get a grasp of what these women are REALLY about.

My book group is reading this... I will be curious to see what comes out of the discussion. Overall, not a horrific read, but not a book I would pick up and read again. I like to identify with at least one character in a novel, whether good or bad, and this one left me feeling somewhat ignored.
