Sounds terribly self-serving, but based upon what you've liked, I think you'd like my book, THE POWER: A NOVEL OF VOODOO a true story of a real African American woman in the 19th Century ... escaped slave, studied with Marie Laveau in New Orleans, fled to San Francisco in 1851 where she became a civil rights worker, millionaire mining stock investor, and sometimes murderess.

I'm now reading a mistery of the same period in San Francisco, THE CLIFF HOUSE STRANGLER that has a lot of twists and turns and which features a lady lawyer (unusual for the time), but holds my attention enough that I miss my bus stop from time to time.

I'm reading McBride's Song Yet Sung and just finished A Million Nightingales. I loved Nightingale because of the poetic language and I'm loving Song Yet Sung because of the fast action and suspense ... I said earlier, he's as exciting as any Horror writer (e.g., Stephen King) I know.
