When I look at my life and my self and how it all came to be, I see reading as the single strongest factor. It has shaped my thinking, my sense of humor, the way I express myself, and probably made my career choice for me -- I'm a technical writer. I used to read Pride and Prejudice about every other week, and in between I'd read P.G. ... more »

Thanks for the recommendation... looks interesting! I'm sloggin' my way through Infinite Jest at the moment (and for what seems like an infinite number of moments). Good but very dense and very long. Hope you're having a good summer.

Sounds great! I like a lot of those same elements in my fiction.

Hey, have you ever read any Kay Kenyon? I'm currently reading "Bright of the Sky," which is sort of fantasy in SF clothing, and really well done. It's my first KK book, but I look forward to reading more of her stuff.

I always think it's strange that we humans, who really only function as constantly-communicating, communal animals, strap ourselves into these contraptions that are completely unable to communicate with each other (except with an occasional "honk!", whatever that means) or even sense each other. No wonder there are so many accidents.

Hi Margaret, I saw your note about The Time of our Singing (by Richard Powers). I thought you'd be interested to know if you were correct about the ending. I too expected an unhappy ending but couldn't put the book down. The ending was not what I expected and in fact very satisfying. You might want to re-consider since you enjoyed the music part so much.

Hey Margaret! Fun to see your bookshelf -- I had not heard of Bujold or Riley or Leon. Looks like interesting stuff. Have you heard of Jeri Smith-Ready? Kathryn and I were knocked out by her trilogy starting with Eyes of Crow. Great stuff.
