Thanks for the invitation, Taher. I didn't realize you were here, too. We seem to be finding each other all over the place. *laugh*

And I see you've been reading Wodehouse. I recall one or two Bertie Wooster stories when I was much younger, but I think I'll pick him up again. By the way, I said your review was excellent, and it was, but what I really meant to say was insightful.

I see you have finished The God of Small Things. I would like to read your review, particularly since your review of A Fine Balance was so excellent.

    Dear Taher K,
    RE: (i)A Fine Balance(/i)
I decided to take a moment out from my reading of (i)A Fine Balance(/i) to read a few reviews. I found yours particularly intelligent and insightful.
    Thank you,

You are so right about fees for shipping. I send books, DVDs, etc. to my son, who is a peace corps volunteer, in Lesotho, Africa. He isn't supposed to be charged import, so we write on the packages "teaching materials for Peace Corps Volunteer, and also on the customs declaration. They still hold packages, the longest was six months, and charge duty occasionally, plus it is very expensive to ship, even media rates from the US Postal Service, which gives the cheapest rate. I finished The Gathering and started on Excellent Women. Much lighter reading.

What are you reading at present? I'm just on the last few pages of "The Gathering", the 2007 Booker prize winner. It's about an Irish family and a wake and funeral. Next I'm going to start on a book one of my friends recommended, "Queen Lucia".

I see I did not edit, and I used a double negative. I meant that not all citizens are xenophobic.

Please do not send me your book. It was presumptuous of me to ask. My children are adults and past any sort of intervention, but I'm happy to say they are doing well. One of them is in Lesotho with the Peace Corps, working in HIV prevention, and the other is a student of nursing. I've been interested in Indian culture because so many of my nursing students are from India, as well as Pakistan, and one was from Nepal. Sometimes my class looks like a meeting of the United Nations. Because of the University, there are many students here from other countries. I am just interested in showing them that not all citizens of this country are not xenophobic. "A Fine Balance" was so excellent, do you have other recommendations?

On the contrary, I think I can learn from you. Two of my relatives are Pediatricians, as well, one has just retired after 45 years of practice, and one who lives here and practices emergency medicine in a pediatric setting. I would like to read your book on child care. Is it for lay people or professional. When my sons were small I referred to my copy of Dr. Spock constantly. Reading to my children was probably one of the best things I ever did for them.

You seem to be a person of many interests and talents, as well.

I read your review of "A Fine Balance" by Rohinton Mistry. You expressed your impressions so well. I had a similar reaction. I was engrossed in it, some pages so difficult to read I had to stop and prepare myself before proceeding. It is one of the books that I think can change lives. It was recommended to me by one of my students, a young girl whose parents came to Texas from Punjabi. I think they are Sikh. It is one of the most wonderful books I've ever read. It had such an effect on me...I can only imagine that you, as a citizen of Mumbai must have been even more astounded. I will look for other of your reviews and recommendations.
