Jeanne D

I used to get kicked out of class in middle school for reading novels in algebra class. I just couldn't focus, why should I listen to X-(1+Y)= ? problems when I had a good book going. Now I work in a library and although I cant read all day long, I have learned when I can read and when to do my work. (Usually).

You know, I checked it out on audio a while back but never got to it so had to check it back in. It did sound interesting. I will give it another try. I'm finishing up one audiobook now and have one in the queue, but that one will be next after. I remember being disappointed in having to return it without even opening it. I definitely don't have time to read it in book format - although i wish i did

Oh! I have been such a slug about keeping up with my shelf! I'll do better. As for what I'm reading lately...nothing really wonderful, just "ok". I did like Hattie Big Sky and The Luxe, both of which I had to read for Books for the Beast, but they were lightweight, quick reads. Nothing has grabbed me recently.

Yes Jeanne - That would be Mendenhall Glacier from a helicopter - It was amazing. I am reading A Reliable Wife right now and while a book of this genre usually doesn't appeal to me - it's a real page turner.............Hope all is well with you and your family - Lauren P.S. Pics are going out in the mail today.

Jeanne - How can you read three books at one time??????? I'm impressed! Actually I am reading a self-help book in addition to the current fiction - it's title? "But I'm Almost 13"! - I'm hoping it can help me survive the teen years............GOOD LUCK, right? Lauren

Jeanne - Thanks for the invite! This looks really cool - possibly an obsession, however. My son describes me as an "entertainment hoarder" - I love to collect books and recently added some TV series DVDs. I'm hoping to have some time tonight to start my shelf. I really wish I could read faster though. Take care and enjoy - Lauren

I just added "The Help" to my shelf. Sounds very good! I just finished "The Lovely Bones" early, early this morning, so I may give myself a few hours before I start another one. A sort of "book decompression".

Jeanne! You have almost 150 books on your "plan to read shelf"! The size of my self very nearly makes me hyperventilate, and it is a fraction of your total. I had to giggle when I saw yours. I feel ever so much better, thanks to you!

I WANTED to be a history major (or Anthropologist!!) but as it appeared that to get anywhere w/ it, in real life that is, you have to have at least a Master's and preferably a PH.D, I gave it up, and so I just read history and historical fiction a lot! Also mysteries. Ended up being an RN which is NOT too exciting but it pays the bills. I am an obsessive reader however, and luckily I read pretty fast, so I get through a lot of books. Its hard, in fact, finding books I really like. Currently reading several of the Roman era mystery series: David Wishart and Rosemary Rowe, currently. Finished w/ the series of John Maddox Roberts (really good!) and Steven Saylor and Lindsey Davis. When I get into an era of history, I tend to obssess for a while on everything I can find on it, including non-fiction. I've checked out several non-fiction Roman history books from the library, but pretty much "history lite". I went through a 2 year ancient Egyptian era book period, and have a listmania on Amazon on that. I also have read all the Mary Renault books on ancient Greece (fiction, but so well done!!). And I like the Tudor era (of course, who doesn't?) Gilly

to Jeanne D, I saw your note to Kiki in which you mentioned not being able to get through "The Lovely Bones"....please go back and finish it. The first chapter is the roughest. After that...well, would you believe there are even spots of humor? Anyway its a moving and worthwhile read. Not a gross-out, violence-fest, which I personally hate.

Thanks so much for adding me. How funny that you were on the east side of PA. We started in West Chester, but settled in Birdsboro. I have a feeling you know exactly where that is. And don't be impressed that I have added so many books. I am playing quite a bit of catch-up. I want to read more than I have, and have that as a goal. There are some who read 100 books a year! Egad - I am not sure that is even attainable for me.

    Hi!

You didn't say where your girls (right, girls?) are off to? Are they in college? 18 yo still lives at home, but is often out and about and at work as well as school. She will be going to a nearby community college for a while, as she has no direction right now. I am crossing my fingers though--hopefully she will be out on her own soon--we could use the space around here, actually!

I have 12 and 13 yo daughters, so with the 18 yo it is mood swing central around here! I pray the 8 yo will stay my sweet baby boy. He sure does love his mama and sisters, especially 12 yo sister. They are super close.

Kiki is a nickname--Kathleen is my "real" name, but I actually answer to Kiki in real life! Many of my friends call me that, but not family...

Re. book group--we've all seen our kids grow up, there was lots of nursing going on for a while! And we've grown up as well. We are all around 40. I'll be 41 this year. It really is pretty cool.

I am one of the "older" people at the bookstore I work at--I turned 40 last summer and was very traumatized. But we all get along really well. There is woman there who is about 64, too, and a manager in his 30's--I do most of my commiserating with them. I just feel like everyone else's mom...I'd love to be at the library, though...*sigh***

Have you read "What Was She Thinking/Notes on a Scandal" by Zoƫ Heller? It was a movie with Cate Blanchett as well. Its the school teacher/student thing--older woman, young boy affair. Very sad and disturbing, really. Read it for my other book group (not the 12 years one), and we had a great discussion about it.

I liked the Lovely Bones, but I read it a while back. I can see being pretty disturbed by it now though since my babies are older.

My 13 yo daughter is standing over me now, snooping about--we just checked and I have 110 friends. Some are not very active anymore! but a lot of them I do talk to in groups, and if I come across someone I haven't talked to in awhile, I try to say hello. Some of them are people I actually know in real life.

The girls are laughing at my profile now--I added some funny stuff about my husband and they think it is very amusing--he made me say that stuff, I swear!

My nickname should be "Chatty Kathy" says my 13 yo. I will shut up now!

    Good night!

reading is my escape. I recently went out of town (up to NY, passing through your neck of the woods on the way--VA, my aunt lives in Abingdon, VA) and got a little behind, so I am trying to read a lot this last week to catch up!

Unfortunately, with the economy the way it is, I have been only getting three days of work a week, but even then, with the kids, I am busy! But really, anyone who knows me will tell you--Kiki is a reading nut! Always have been! Kind of like you! And seriously, my grammar, punctuation and spelling is not so great!

Funny you should mention all the groups I'm in--some of them aren't very active, and some times I get really bored. BTS (Better Than Starbucks) is my favorite group--and it isn't strictly book talk.

I so envy you working in a library! We are not allowed to read in the bookstore--totally against the rules! Silly, I think! I long to go back to school and get my MLS! But, I think the 8 yo "baby" boy still needs me an awful lot, though! Your kids are so grown up--my 18 yo step daughter is graduating from high school this week. Very weird!

My kids get annoyed when I go to book club. I am in two that are pretty active, onefor about 12 years now. That's pretty cool, we've read a lot of books together over the years. But I get conflicted and like to read what I choose. Although, I guess I have a big say in what both groups pick, luckily!

I'll be peaking at your shelf too, to see what you're reading these days as well! It is a great way to fins stuff to read. Most of the TBR pile is an actual book on my shelf, very few are ones I don't own. If I don't own it, I usually get it from the library!

I haven't accidentally tried to friend a teen, but I have gotten a few requests from kids--not sure how--guess some of the kids' books , like Speak and Each Little Bird That Sings--now that one is a heart breaker, if you haven't read it. See if they have a copy at your library!

I'll gab all night, and I just finished a great book--Hotel on the Corner if Bitter and Sweet. Oh, it was fabulous! Talk with you soon!

Hi Jeanne--I didn't think it was "stalkerish" at all! If I didn't want others on Shelfari to see it, I wouldn't be on there!

My kids made those pictures with my digital camera--my son has a toy Hummer and they had a bunch of those chicks from Easter. All on their own-but I know exactly the book you are talking about, and when I saw those pictures I got a real big kick out of them doing that, as the book's content was a little too old for them!
