I am retired and writing my first novel...fulfilling a lifelong passion.

I enjoy reading literary fiction, thrillers and some mysteries...but generally read anything that comes in front of me.

Hi Jacqui, thanks for the request :-). So glad to have you as part of the group. I've been a bit lax the past few months about getting in any authors. I'm hoping to do much better this month. I love your avatar btw. That bridge is beautiful.

Hi Jacqui. I'm from the Author Author group and wanted to welcome you to our group. August’s featured author is Pearl Buck, and we have two alternate authors, Lisa See and Anchee Min. If you're interested, you can choose a book written by any (or all!) of these three authors, and after you've read it, please come post a review and star rating so the rest of us in the group know what you read and whether you liked it or not. Happy Reading!

Just an added note that we should be announcing our authors for September later this week.

Oh that is funny! Birmingham--then there is also B'ham England--I'd love to live there--every B'ham seems to be an industrial sort of town, no? but down here it is pretty nice now--I know I saw something recently about a serial killer up there and B'ham, MI looked like a pretty nice place to live too--well, except for the serial killer of young children walking alone to their friend's house! No crime here--ha ha! (it is actually a pretty violent city--we live in a very suburban area).

My book group friend just kind of chose The Leisure Seekers at random last month for something to read for this month--quick and easy. I kind of had the same feeling about as you did, but it is actually a really good read--I am thoroughly enjoying it. Its funny. you might like it. I'll give you the final verdict when I finish--sure to finish it tomorrow, as the children are going gold mining with my mom for the day--thank goodness.

    Have a great weekend! Kiki

just got back from vacation [oldest granddaughter graduated and we did it in the car as plane trip is pretty much out for me so it took 3 weeks across and back country from NY to Oregon to NY] and now my husband is in the hospital to have his medicine reconciled...his blood pressure is weird...fine laying down but really low standing up...thus he has almost passed out more times than I wish to count.

I trust you received the book, MANDY THE ALPHA DOG...it is for sale on Amazon.com [with a review- excited that that happened]and on my site www.paulandpaulasplazainc.com and on publishamerica.com, the publisher's site.

I read your short on Amazon...is this a start of a novel....please tell me yes...I am interested in these characters. I am slowly touching base with everyone...sorry this took so long but I was beat when we got back and almost immediately, my youngest grandchildren [4 1/2 & 23 month] stayed a week and then I was flattened!....P

And I, yours...a long ago daycare provider for my oldest sons raised Irish Setters and so much went into it...for a truly good breeder....this book alludes to a puppy mill and one of my 4 dogs was from one while two were from good breeders - all were rescue tho in some way or another.

I am in forced retirement from lymph edema caused by a mastectomy with my second bout of breast cancer. I am in my 60's tho' and my hubby has been bugging me for years about writing [because I read so much] but it is entirely different.

I'm rooting for your novel....much more extensive than what I did, and did backwards...wrote first then found out what grabs....I was fortunate to join the suspense group and Keith Katsikas, author of The Newton Prophecies was [maybe still is listed too]the administrator of that site and had some really good books on writing.

After I took them from the library and checked on them I found that the way I had written them was correct [maybe all that reading did pay off] but when I got to the one on selling the book to a publisher or through an agent I got so discouraged and decided to just do it for my granddaughter and have my son do the illustrations as he needed to get back into his music and drawing after a disastrous marriage. But we had friends and relatives look at the book and refuse to leave off reading until done and was told publish it...well, we almost went self - publishing until Upland on Better than Starbucks....said, 'if you're going to do that then do it yourself and take it around.'

Instead I went surfing and found a fit, sent an inquiry letter, was asked to send in for them to take a look, and then they asked me to sign a contract. Now I'm sitting in the waiting room awaiting the birth. It's nerve wracking....so I guess I go and write another baby...uh, book.....P

Welcome to Better than Starbucks! Look around, make yourself at home, start a new thread or dig up an old one or just read and jump in on the more active ones.

We are honored to be one of your first groups!
