I'd like to know which books you have most enjoyed reading with your girls. I also have three girls and I am always looking for new books to read with them.

I thought this new web site might be of interest to you. It's a new site that just got started where authors and readers can chit chat and where readers can find out about new books. Stop by and check it out: http://bookeventcenter.ning.com (I try to go to the chat there on Tuesdays around 7:30 p.m. Eastern Time.)

Hola! We actually don't have any snow here at all... all of the nasty weather has missed us. But it is cold ... about 30 right now I think. Right now I wish I lived in Florida!

Well, good, I'm glad to be helpful. :)

For our enrichment coming up, though I wish we weren't, we're doing a Super Saturday. Nightmare of all nightmares. And I don't even like to craft. I do jewelry, but I don't "craft." So. You can see what we're doing-I created a blog for it. www.cp1supersaturday.blogspot.com. That's in November, but our stake does a huge community creche (did I spell that right?) project, so we don't do any Enrichment in December. I think that's better anyway. December is SO busy, both for you and for the ladies in your ward, that I say-eliminate anything in December that you can.
But I know that the ward right next to us is doing a "Holiday Celebration," though I admit I have no idea what exactly that means. We had talked about having almost like... a testimony meeting about the Savior for Christmas, and then we'd just have hot chocolate and donuts or something. And something that we are doing in January, but it would work for December is "Happiness-The Gift You Won't Return." Something like that. We're having one of the members of our temple presidency come and talk about how to be happy in different stages of your life, with different situations, etc. Well, I haven't worked out all the details on that one yet, but that's the bare bones of the idea.

Hello! I am also in charge of Enrichment, so I know where you're coming from. :) Yes, I'd be more than happy to provide feedback on anything that I've read. (I suppose my mom recommended me because of my "discerning" tastes... :) Anyway, as far as A Long Way Gone goes, it is graphic. It's not sexual or anything that might cause concerns that way, and it is SO educational and just a great read (I thought), but it's definitely got lots of specific graphic violent scenes. (I mean, it's about a child soldier and what he sees and is forced to participate in...) If you have any other specific questions about it, I'd be happy to answer or talk about it further.
As far as 3 Cups of Tea-I can't see any reason why a Relief Society group couldn't read it. It's very current and pertinent right now-the one thing I guess I would say about it is that sometimes it's boring... but not through the whole thing, just parts. But nothing offensive that I can remember. I don't know if I'm giving you what you're after here...
And as far as other recommendations, if you're looking for kind of... non fiction stuff-which is what you asked me about with the other two books, I do love love love Left to Tell-again, some graphic nature, but it felt less graphic than A Long Way Gone. Also, she comes out of the experience with a heightened spiritual awareness (of course, not LDS), but that might be an interesting aspect for a religious discussion group. That was a great book. Loved it.
And the other one that I 100% adored and feel that I could, without any reservation whatsoever, recommend to a RS Book Club was Having Our Say. Fabulous. You could have SUCH great discussion-it seems very pertinent right now, given that we've just elected our first black president. It's the story of these great, wonderful sisters who live to be just ancient and they kind of take you through their lives and offer their little input and opinions on things on the way. Tons to be learned from it-both historically and just how to be a good person in your life. When you're done reading it, you just really wish you could be their friends. So. If I had to pick my first favorite for this purpose, that might be it, but I hope I've given you enough input/information that you could make your own decision as to what might be right for your group. As you can see from the length of this reply, I'm happy to talk about whatever-so if you have other questions or anything, just ask! :)

    Good luck!

Hi again! Check out my daughter's shelf. She's Bethany W. She has great taste in books, and only puts 4 or 5 star books on her shelf. She is a voracious reader, and always has new material on there. Her standards are very high, so if she approves of it, it will be a clean read.

Hi! The FableHaven series are fun and squeaky clean. The author, Brandon Mull, is LDS. Even though the books are intended for a young adult, or teen, they are fun to read. If you haven't tried those, they would be good!

Hi! I don't think I would recommend it for a Relief Society book club. It's a coming of age novel, and there is a nude scene where she is alone, but curious about her body as she is experiencing an infatuation with an African American guy. Nothing happens (she is alone), but it's kind of suggestive - not R.S. material. Try "These is My Words." Great story, squeaky clean!

I know how it is to be the "eternal" enrichment leader...I've done that one 3 different times for a total of about 6 years. Our RS pres suggested that they would rather do a classics or deseret book group and so I just sent one e-mail out to the RS saying that book club was no longer going to be RS affiliated and if anyone was interested to e-mail me back. Now I just contact those people. We have about 18 people that are on the list--we've had about 12 or so at the meetings. Good luck and let me know if I can help any other way! Carol

Hi! I have not read it. A good friend of mine said that a friend of hers did it for their enrichment book club and were also going to see the movie but the bishop said, no way, since it is pg13. Our book club is now totally separate from RS so we can avoid any controversy and we have better attendance than we ever used to!! We just read The Heretic's Daughter about the Salem witch trials and everyone really loved it and we had a great discussion. Good luck! Carol
