I'm new to Shelfari or any kind of online community. But I love books - read all the time, and a friend told me about this site, so... here I am. I teach elementary school art and have two kids of my own. Growing up we lived in lots of different countries so we read for entertainment or quiet time. My sister and I read the same books as my...more »

Was happy to see Dune discussed. This is the book I pick if I have to pick ONE favorite book of all time. I have read this book every summer since I was 15 (let's just say that means I've read it over 20 times). I'm not even that big of a sci-fi fan, it's just that this book is so rich and so completely engrossing that I never fail to fall into it and relish every page. I know people have said it's "hard to get into" at first, but keep going - it's a remarkable book. Just great!

A charming, hilarious, delightfully written book that has lots of wonderful history in it but is primarily an adventure/exploration story - full of the most wonderful characters.

One of my all time favorite books in the world. Another one that is so beautifully read on audio (by the author) that I am in love with Charles Frazier sight unseen. (ha ha) If you like Civil War historical fiction, it's one of the best. If you don't - it's still one amazing read. I own it in hardback, softback and on audio. I don't know quite how that happened!

I have read this book twice - it's that good. Plus, if you like books on audio cassett or CD, it's beautifully read on audio and I could read it again and again.

OK, I know. But don't be put off by the title or the subject matter - read it for yourself and you will have knowledge and insight that I can't image getting from any other source. Plus, the writer is wonderfully humorous without ever being offensive or disrespectful. I forced this on my book club - they LOVED it!

Who knew that the Farrallon Islands were so fascinating and that one incredibly intrepid woman would risk so much for the love research and studying the marine ecosystem of this unique place. Totally gripping. Don't try to read it before bed, you'll be up all night reading.

I just LOVE this book. It is original, utterly compelling and mixes so many genres and different characters, settings, times, storylines - without ever losing the coherence of the whole. I could not put it down, I think this author is an amazing storyteller! Would love to meet him. Read all his books after reading Cloud Atlas.

This is a remarkable book that has stayed with me and prompted me to both count my blessings and have moments of awe at what the human spirit and can endure and overcome. It's a great read.
