I'm a dentist living in northern Rhode Island. I'd say I probably read 2-4 books a week and am always looking for new things to read. I read a lot of sci-fiction, fantasy and historical fiction. My husband appreciates this since he always has a full stack on his to be read pile. I've joined a few groups to widen my horizons and if you have... more »

Another solid entry in the Anita Blake series, this time it's pretty much Anita solo, she has to get herself out of the mess she is in with nobody's help. There's new shifters (were-lions) in town and they aren't there to try and meet up with Anita's lioness and they are working for a potential client that won't take no for an answer.

Second book in the series. The Mystery of who Kate is doesn't get much resolution although there are many hints being left and the "romance" between Kate and Curran (The Beast of Atlanta) continues to simmer. Kate investigates a disappearing crossbowman and finds herself in the warren with a girl who's mother is missing with a coven of witches. Kate finds herself the champion of the girl and along the way meets the Hero of a Irish Goddess and helps save the world, again.

A good first book in the series. Atlanta is a city in a world gone crazy between tech and magic where in a blink of an eye a lightbulb may work then it may not and a fey lantern would light your room. Kate is a mercenary who's mentor has been murdered and she swears vengeance. But Kate is much more than a mercenary and who, or what she is is one of the lines of mystery that underscores the book. Along the way Kate meets and butts heads with the Beast of Atlanta who is the head of all the shapeshifters of Atlanta their story interweaves with the central mysteries of the book making it more than just your typical paranormal romance.

It's a post apocalyptic America, now known as Panem and the central government is surrounded by 12 (although it used to be 13) districts, each one producing something the Capitol needs to thrive. But for the people who live in these cities they do not reap what they sow, most live on the edge of starvation and face death for any little infraction of the laws. Then there are the hunger games - once a year a boy and a girl ages 12 to 18 are chosen from each district to compete in a "game" where the winner is the only survivor. It's a bit like the movie "The Running Man". Katniss is 16 years old and she volunteers for the "game" when her delicate 12 year old sister has her name picked. She is paired with Peeta who it seems, has been in love with her since she was small. We follow her as she fights to survive at almost all cost, but victory may be bittersweet.

Mira is a special vampire, but how special she doesn't realize. Born as a "First Blood" she is the sole Vampire to be able to cast and control fire but what she doesn't realize is that she was made for a purpose. Danaleus is a Vampire hunter who invades Mira's territory but he isn't out to kill her...yet, he needs her help stopping the Naturi, beings who 500 years ago kidnapped Mira and tortured her until she was saved by a triad of Elder Vampires. But the more Mira learns about her honored enemy and the elder Vampires that made her the more her loyalties become split, except for one thing...the Naturi must be stopped or life as the vampires and humans know it will be no more.

A great series of short stories about the hunters that hunt the day and night out of our sight and our knowledge. 4 great authors write short stories about the ancillary characters in their books (except maybe Melissa Marr - I've never read any of her work) I'm not a big short story fan but it was nice getting to know some of these characters better.

What seems to be the end of the 3rd series of 3 book arcs all involving the Galloway marines. The Xul are back and the marines are taken out of cyberhibe 850 years after they last went in. People have changed, as they always do when the marines go into cyberhibe but where there once were only one type of humans there are now many some even machine uploaded and there are many more "aliens" than they knew of before. Somethings never change no matter what the humans and aliens are, like political infighting, backstabbing and hidden agendas. A good sequel and good ending to the arc of books.

Another great installement in the Kitty Norville series. Kitty goes to have a 2 week stay to film a "reality" tv show deep in the mountains of montana but all isn't what it seems and not only does she have to play mediator between another were-wolf, a were-seal, a pair of sensitives, a pair of vampires, Odysseus Grant and a very sceptical non-believer but suddenly she has to keep them all alive

  • Katherine

Anna Seyton brings the story of John of Gaunt and Katherine de Roen to life with this well researched, well written historical novel. She brings the glory, poverty, richness and squalor of the 14th century England to light with her well written prose. The waves of the black death are not glossed over or dwelled upon but given as a feared part of life then and something that shaped society and the people she gives voice and life to in the book are poeple of that time and day not given modern sensibilities. The romance between John and Katherine has often been shrouded in mystery because of her relative obscurity "base" birth, and the poor treatment she has received by the chroniclers of the time because of the years she was John's mistress. This is a wonderful book bringing to life a true love that began as an illicit romance that spanned decades and heartaches, 3 kings, 2 waves of the black death, and the Peasant Revolt. Not all of the dark ages was dark in the hearts of men and women.

I didn't know what to expect when I started this book, and halfway through the book I didn't expect to want to finish it because I don't like horror stories. But by the time it was done I was rooting for Joe and hoping he would survive. Joe Pitt was infected by the Vampyr virus 30 years ago and he's been trying to keep what's left of his humanity ever since. He's gone rogue after being the Society's bat boy and he doesn't want to get involved with the Coalition other than odd jobs. His self proclaimed job - to keep the streets clear of zombies, who, of course love to eat brains. And that's where the book starts - Joe is chasing down 3 zombies that are looking for some sweetbread snack but it goes bad and Joe realizes there is a "carrier" out there someone or something infecting the people with the zombie bacteria. Pretty soon Joe is getting beat up by both sides and being made to work for the Coalition. The book careens along from one dizzying scene to another with tense writing and gory scenes. Not for the faint of heart but a solid book with a finish that left me not only enjoying the book but looking for more of Joe kicking *ss sometime soon.
