I'm a dentist living in northern Rhode Island. I'd say I probably read 2-4 books a week and am always looking for new things to read. I read a lot of sci-fiction, fantasy and historical fiction. My husband appreciates this since he always has a full stack on his to be read pile. I've joined a few groups to widen my horizons and if you have... more »

  • Katherine
    • Rated 5 stars

Anna Seyton brings the story of John of Gaunt and Katherine de Roen to life with this well researched, well written historical novel. She brings the glory, poverty, richness and squalor of the 14th century England to light with her well written prose. The waves of the black death are not glossed over or dwelled upon but given as a feared part of life then and something that shaped society and the people she gives voice and life to in the book are poeple of that time and day not given modern sensibilities. The romance between John and Katherine has often been shrouded in mystery because of her relative obscurity "base" birth, and the poor treatment she has received by the chroniclers of the time because of the years she was John's mistress. This is a wonderful book bringing to life a true love that began as an illicit romance that spanned decades and heartaches, 3 kings, 2 waves of the black death, and the Peasant Revolt. Not all of the dark ages was dark in the hearts of men and women.

  • Already Dead: A Novel
    • Rated 4 stars

I didn't know what to expect when I started this book, and halfway through the book I didn't expect to want to finish it because I don't like horror stories. But by the time it was done I was rooting for Joe and hoping he would survive. Joe Pitt was infected by the Vampyr virus 30 years ago and he's been trying to keep what's left of his humanity ever since. He's gone rogue after being the Society's bat boy and he doesn't want to get involved with the Coalition other than odd jobs. His self proclaimed job - to keep the streets clear of zombies, who, of course love to eat brains. And that's where the book starts - Joe is chasing down 3 zombies that are looking for some sweetbread snack but it goes bad and Joe realizes there is a "carrier" out there someone or something infecting the people with the zombie bacteria. Pretty soon Joe is getting beat up by both sides and being made to work for the Coalition. The book careens along from one dizzying scene to another with tense writing and gory scenes. Not for the faint of heart but a solid book with a finish that left me not only enjoying the book but looking for more of Joe kicking *ss sometime soon.

Another solid entry in the Merry Gentry series. Merry is back in LA living at Maeve Reeds estate with her bodyguards and lovers when she gets a call from the police about a grusome fae murder. As usual with Merry there are many subplots roaming through the main story line, and there are more loves and lovers to be found and explored although the descriptions of her sexual exploits are almost becoming formalistic. Still it's a good book and the story moves along as Merry's pregnancy continues and the future of faere is still uncertain.

  • Winter Duty: A Novel of the Vampire Earth

Another dark book in the series. David Valentine just can't seem to win. All his victories are Pyrrhic with him tending to get the blame when things do not go as Southern command wants (which is always). David is back in Kentucky the site of the action in the last book with new friends and old and a traitor in their midst. The Southern Command is being taken over by Davids old Nemesis General Martinez and is clearing out the base but David is being allowed to run a guerrilla group with his ex-quislings and some of his old team. The legworm clans and many of the people of Kentucky are deciding on their future and it seems that David is, as usual, stuck in the middle on the hard side of it. The book is an excellent continuation of the series but is not for those who look for a happy ending or good closure - the war against the Kurians goes on.

  • Tempest Rising (Jane True)
    • Rated 3 stars

I really wanted to love this book, the premise was very original and it seemed that it had the potential for a great cast of characters. I was enthralled with it for about 1/3 of the book until it took a right hand turn and became less about the development of Jane True and the other characters and the plot and more about the opportunities Jane and Ryu had to have sex. The plot picks back up in the final 1/3 of the book along with the development of the other supernatural characters but the middle 1/3 was a let down for me. I know it's a a "paranormal romance" but for me it lacked constancy. That being said I will probably give the second book a look since the idea of the book is enthralling.

Another fast paced, relentless action filled Jill Kismet book. Perry is still trying to get back the upper hand while Jill is holding on to every advantage she can find. When the Cirque du Charnu comes to town things begin to go bad, fast and if Jill can not find out why Cirque performers are becoming very dead her city and her life could be forfeit. But Jill has problems concentrating on the problem ahead of her, Saul is home but there is something wrong between them and she just doesn't have the time to set it right. Add in the possibility of her taking on an apprentice and it just gets more complex for Jill before it gets any easier.

  • Trick of the Light: A Trickster Novel (Trixa)
    • Rated 4 stars

A fun start to a new series. Trixa is on Trixa's side, that much is clear from the start. She kills demons and holds no love for the heavenly host either. Her burning desire is to right the wrong of her beloved brothers death - at all cost, and the key to that is the Light of Ages something she's been searching for the the 10 years or so she's been living in Vegas. For help she and has two misfits Griffin and Zeke, her bartender Leo and Lenore the raven all of which are not anything like what they seem. An action packed book with good plot twists and turns and an ending that I totally didn't expect.

  • First Lord's Fury
    • Rated 5 stars

A great end to the series (if it is not the end he certainly seemed to wrap everything up neatly) Tavi comes into his own with his furies and with his intellect although it is not without its costs both in friends and lives. The vord queen seems to be unbeatable - gaining power with furies and trying to woo the Alereans to her side with promises of protection if they will not fight her. More cities fall as the refugee's and the lords fall back to the Calderon valley but this is all according to plan ... but will the plan survive the machinations of Ividiea who has joined forces with the Vord Queen in a bid to stay alive
