WHY AUDIO BOOKS ROCK

Listening to Audio books has saved my life!!! It is true. I listen to them in my kitchen and the bathroom and while working out, but it is in my car that they've most effected my health. If it weren't for them, I'd have fallen asleep at the wheel (more than once), veered over the yellow line and through the guard... more »

Hey Amanda- nice to hear back from you. You're right, it has been a while. I am glad you have found a new outlet in audio books- I can't imagine how busy you are with a 1 year old. I've never had any children. I'm not much of a fan of Ian McEwan- I can understand how he appeals to some people, but his work is not my cup of tea. I've seen the film version of "Atonement" and have read "Amsterdam" and "On Chesil Beach" so I feel that I've given him a fair shake.

Our weather has cooled somewhat- it's about 80 now at 3PM, whereas during July and August it is usually about 95 during the same part of the day. Nights are now in the mid to upper 50's.

I hope to talk to you again soon. Jason

Hi Amanda- I hope things are going well out west. We are broiling here in South Carolina. What are you reading these days? I am reading a light novel right now called "Bet Your Bottom Dollar" by Karin Gillespie- it is set in SC so I am familiar with the different places in the book which is neat. I am going to read a book of short stories by various authors next as well as Barbara Kingsolver's "Pigs in heaven". I see you've read "Atlas Shrugged" - it had a tremendous philosophical impact on me when I was in high school (eek! 20 years ago), but when I tried to re-read it several months ago I just couln't get through it. Conversely I reread "The Fountainhead" and really enjoyed the second time around...anyway I am getting long winded. Take care and I hope to hear from you soon. Jason

Hi Amanda! My husband has a cousin that lives in Albuquerque but we have never been down to visit! Sounds like you wouldn't like our frosty climate, but today should be sunny and 80 degrees so we'll have a nice respite from the cold at least for a few months.

I recently bought a copy of Alice in Wonderland/ Through the Looking Glass myself. I never read it a s a child, either. It is on my summer reading list (which will in reality last for the rest of the year. I'll stick it out with Rebecca.

    Hey Amanda-
I just wanted to check in and see how your summer is going. I am finally reading "Rebecca"- it has kind of started slow for me so far- I have read about 100 pages. I do hate Mrs. Danvers- she is evil. What are you reading? Drop me a line and let me know how you are doing. Talk to you soon, Jason PS- I like Willa Cather,too- I have read Archbishop, My Antonia, and O Pioneers.

Glad you made it to Better than Starbucks. Make yourself at home! Dig up an old thread, jump in on an active one, or start a new one. Feel free to make this your "home site"

BTW, congrats on the new baby, i have a 26 yr old, a 21 yr old and a 3 yr old, all boys, all wonderful, but it does get exhausting from time to time, especially those first few months, so try to get some rest:)

Hey- I've really been on a campaign to find new friends- it's actually kind of fun, but it is taking awayfrom my reading time. There is a group that you might be intereted in called "Better than Starbucks"- it's pretty heady, but without the pretentiousness of the "BBD" group- you might want to check it out. Later- Jason.

I like Toni Morrison- I've read Song of Solomon and The Bluest Eye. I tried reading Beloved once but got sidetracked- I would like to pick it up again.

Hey Amanda- What's new? I am reading an anthology of Allen Ginsberg's career and actually looking back into some old self help stuff by Dale Carnegie. What have you been reading?

Hey, my purple-loving friend....I was just looking at your 'Favorites' and read what you wrote about the name 'Esme'. I had the same attraction to that name, and also wanted to name my daughter Esme...but for various reasons (including my husband's vote), it was not to be. Also noticed that Blind Assasin is your all-time fave; I loved it , when I read it several years ago, and keep thinking about rereading it..but every time I go to check it out ( I'm a library person), I always end up leaving it for 'next time'---because it's so LONG, and there are always new books clamoring to be read! Have you read it more than once??

I forgot to mention earlier that "The Portable Beat Reader" put out (I believe) by Viking Press is a great read and a good primer for Beat Generation literature. A good follow up is "Beat Down to Your Soul" edited by Ann Charters. Good Luck.

There were a lot of good beat poets, but I think Allen Ginsberg is the best and most representative of the era. Gregory Corso and Lawrence Ferlinghetti are good, too. I like two of Kerouac collections "Mexico City Blues" and "Book of Blues". There is an excellent anthology of Ginsberg's career that is out and covers 1947-1997.

Hey Amanda--I know, the whole "friends" thing is kind of funny, isn't it--I have a 5th and 6th grade girl, so I guess I can get right into it--its how we talk all the time! Are you "friends," do you like each other etc.,etc., it is silly!

No, this is my first book by Kunzru, and I haven't gotten started yet, I am trying to plow through The Post Birthday World Lionel Shriver). I like it, but it just seems to be kind of a slow read. So, hopefully, I'll be getting started on My Revolutions soon! I have such a TBR pile, it is almost discouraging. Especially since I am working now (at least it is at a bookstore, but we aren't allowed to read!)
I'll let you know what I think when I get going with it! My girls were in a big school play this past weekend, so I really got behind on my reading...

I have been trying in vain to find a used copy of 'Rebecca'- it's at the top of my to-read list--used vs. new is simply in my budget. My local library has a copy- but it is so old it is disintegrating. Maybe I'll break down and buy a copy from Amazon...oh well. I hope that all is well in NM. Did you like 'Pigs in Heaven'? Based on what I've read, I like Kingsolver.
