Hello dear member of the Black Feminist/Womanist Literature group! It's J., the admin., and I'm writing to inform you of the group's new look! (And it goes beyond the change in our group picture, though it is nice, don't you agree?) :) What we're discussing now: Patricia Hill Collins' Black Feminist Thought, Toni Morrison's Sula for our July read, our little BIG Read: 7 short stories in 7 days to begin later this month, the National Black Arts Festival where Alice Walker and Pearl Cleage are featured speakers, and more!

We'll soon have a group blog up and running, will begin profiling the uberly dynamic authors within our own group, discussing women's/girls action coalitions in your city, reviving some of our good ol' threads, etc.

I challenge everyone to invite at least one friend (already a member of shelfari or otherwise) to join the Black Feminist/Womanist Literature group and to log in at least bi-weekly. (Though weekly would be wonderful!) And I pledge to do the same.

And did you know that Toni Morrison's new novel, A Mercy, is due to be released in November? Ah, you would if you'd visited our group page! (No, actually, I haven't posted this information. lol) But do stop by and fall into the purple haze that is extraordinary literature by feminists of color!

    Love, Jaya

Thanks to you I've added Wanda Sykes' book to my book shelf and hope to purchase it soon. I do love her comedy and I know if you were laughing out loud reading her book - it's something I need to purchase.

Thanks for the book reccomendation sis. Now if only my library carried Kinky Gazpacho, I'd request it this week, but they don't carry it. I'll look at Border's for it, I have a 30% coupon I can use.

    Luvlilocs,

I was looking through your shelf and I see we have a lot of books in common. I too enjoy Darnella Ford and Choke was my favorite so far by her. I read these books recently and I think you'll enjoy, Sanderine's Letter to Tomorrow by Dedra Johnson and Orange Mint and Honey by Carleen Brice.

    Hi luvlilocs,

I enjoyed The Good House but that was a big book! That was my first book read by Ms. Due. I read Casanegra with her husband and Blair Underwood and I'm looking forward to the sequel when it's out. I have The Living Blood and The Between, just haven't read them yet. Did you read Kindred by Octavia Butler? What are you reading now?

Yes. I belong to a book club (Little Black Book Club).

We've discussed opening the bookclub to new members but have not decided exactly when we will begin this process. We are having our first annual retreat this weekend in Williamsburg. I will bring up this issue during the retreat and let you know the results upon our return.

In the meantime, check out our website www.freewebs.com/lbbcm to learn more about the members and the book club. Sign the guestbook and let us know if you are still interested in joining.
