You want me to put all the books I've read, own, want to read, and want to buy on here? You must be kidding!

I like to read from lists (i.e. Recommended College Reading List, Time's Best English Language Novels Since 1923, etc.) I find that lists are a good place to find a lot of books that I will like, and they rarely have really... more »

Oh Amanda, I have so many favorites! And I keep adding to the lists while removing nothing! This year from the list I have particularly enjoyed "Regeneration", "The Corrections", "The Butcher Boy", "Justine" (by Durrell) and "New Grub Street among others. A bit disappointed in "Spring Flowers, Spring Frost" and "The History of the Siege of Lisbon". Like you, "Unless" did not do too much for me. I liked Shield's other one of the list much better (can't recall the title right now .....something with Stone and Dairy in the title).

I'll never find them all either, but I recently received a Kindle for Mother's Day and have been able to fill in many of the gaps on my wish-list shelves for free! Great stuff!

I read off the list a good bit also, but I keep trudging on to whatever total I finally get to before I lose my eyesight! I think I might do a re-read of "Tender is the Night" for my next one. It has been years since I read that. I recently re-read "The Scarlet Letter" and enjoyed it just as much as the first (if not more) the second time.

Happy reading and let me hear of your progress and thoughts from time to time!
Meanwhile I'll review your shelves a bit more and see what else you've been up to!

    Best regards,
    Judith

Amanda, You seem to be the only friend I have here on Shelfari who is still reading from the 1001 Lists! How are you enjoying it and how many books have you read on the list so far? I'm at 400 and counting though I never expect to read them all!

Thank you for all your answer to my questions on 'should i read this'. I would like to answer this same kind of question for other users, but I do not know how to access other user questions. Could you please help me with that? Thanks again!

Please email me your address so I can send you The Road! Hope you enjoy it more than I did (I was one of the ones who hated it LOL which made it a perfect swap book).

Thanks so much for detailed response.

How's the 1001 Books going for you? I tried to join the group once, but there was no response to the request. I've made a scratch at the list with 173. Could use motivation and discipline to make more headway. Have 67 others from the list moldering away on my physical shelf. List is quirky for what books by an auther gets chosen--Shields a case in point.

Recommend the "Challenged Reader" group for strecthing you to read across multiple genres.

If you like lists, have you checked out Nancy Pearl's "Book Lust". Have got so many great recommendations from her lists of great books by category (e.g. Carol Shields for one). Your library might have the sequel to it.

Have two Tyler novel compendiums, but never ran into anyone who recommended her. So thanks for the push.

Stalled out on Dillard, but will let you know when I get back to it. For nature non-fiction, I recently enjoyed a Barry Lopez, a Kingsolver, and a MacPhee. What I have for a favorites from the past is "Hope is the Thing with Feathers" and "Providence of a Sparrow"--capsule reviews on my Shelf.

Thanks for sending us the blizzard we are having now.

Sorry "Unless" by Carol Shields didn't appeal. I have a fondness for her earlier books ("Stone Diary" and "Larry's Party") and wondered about that newer one. Do you suppose her "Republic of Love" is worth pursuing?

If I like so many Canadian authors, why have I read so little of Atwood? From her wonderful presence on CBC radio and your ratings, I need to give her more of a chance.

Your recent enjoyment of "Once and Future King" reminds me to make it TBR. Am learning to stray from a childhood direction that took me toward historical adventure (like Horatio Hornblower) and hard sci fi (like Heinlein and Asimov)instead of fantasy and historical fantasy. White a good choice now considering my enjoyment in recent years of Harry Potter and Pullman's Dark Materials/Golden Compass series. After White, I might then try Cornwell's Arthurian series and the Bradley's Mists of Avalon.

Thanks for the Dickens recommendations. I don't want to read Bleak House until I've forgotten the plot from the movie somewhat.

Amanda, I noticed in your profile that you do geocaching. Have you ever tried letterboxing--a low tech treasure hunt with written clues and the impression of a handcarved stamp as the reward?
