Hello! I used to read a lot for fun until the massive amounts of required reading and text books for college came along. Now, I'm getting back into reading and enjoying it so far! Now that it's summer...there's nothing... more »

    The Strain

by Guillermo Del Toro, Chuck Hogan
    • Rated 5 stars

I very much enjoyed this book. I haven't read much sci-fi but this book was very captivating and has made me want to read more of that genre.

It opens with a plane landing at JFK airport and suddenly, the lights all go off on the plane, all of the window shades are drawn down, and it is completely still and silent. When personnell finally gets onto the plane a chilling discovery is made...

Del Toro/Hogan have a very vivid way of bringing things to life and captivating your interest. By their descriptions, I could visualize everything that was happening which made this book that much better. (I could totally see this being turned into a movie)

The book tells the story of several different people (who are all somehow involved in the "crisis") so it often leaves each "mini-story" on the edge of something and moves on to the next person/"mini-story". I never wanted to put the book down because I wanted to read to find out what was going to happen next, (you often had to read through someone else's "mini-story" before you get back to the preceding characters story).

This is a story of vampires, and not the ones related to the friendly, lovey ones from Twilight. These are scary, evil, creepy vampires who infect their victims with a virus that takes over their body and transforms them into one of their kind.

All in all this was a great book and I suggest it to anyone who likes this type of genre or is looking to read it for the first time. This is the first book of a trilogy so I am looking forward to the next book coming out.

I enjoyed this book. It wasn't as exciting or gripping as some books I have read, but I think it was meant to be a touching story, and for me it was.

It was narrated by a young girl as she watches down on her family from heaven after being murdered. It is a heart wrenching story of a family trying to move on and gain peace in their own ways after losing their beloved daughter.

It was a bit slow but if you can hang in there I think the story is worth reading.

I enjoyed this book. It was an easy read and I found myself always wanting to know what was going to happen so I read it in 2 days time.

It was about Matilda (Mattie) Cooke, who was a teenage living in 1793 in Philadelphia. Her town was hit with the "yellow fever" and this is the story of her experience. Without giving anything away, it was a story filled with drama, suspense, death, reuniting, heartache and happiness.

Additonally, there is a section in the back that references true historical people, events, places, and practices of the time that were characterized in the book. I found it interesting to read about the real facts about that time. There were even medical practices listed in there that were interesting as people really believed those practices worked to prevent, cure and kill disease.

Anyway, I recommend this read to anyone who is interested especially people that like historical fiction. Its a quick read and is worth the time.

This was an amazing book. It had an interesting perspective as it was narrated by "death". It told the story of a young girl named Liesel who lived in Germany during World War II. It begins with her and her brother on a train with their mother on the way to be united with their new foster parents- and death meets them. She "steals" her first book at a funeral which is one of the several books she "acquires" in her life. Her mother drops her off with her new foster parents, Hans & Rosa Hubermann and her new life begins. While on her journey she meets many friends, steals some books and stares death in the face a few times.

This quote shows the beautiful writing of this book.... "She had seen her ____ die with one eye open. She had said goodbye to her mother and imagined her lonely wait for the train back home to oblivion. A woman of wire had laid herself down, her scream traveling the street, til it fell sideways like a rolling coin starved of momentum. A young man was hung by a rope made of Stalingrad snow. She had watched a bomber pilot die in a metal case. She had seen a Jewish man who had twice given her the most beautiful pages of her life marched to a concentration camp. And at the center of it all she saw the Fuhrer shouting his words and passing around them."

Markus Zusak is a great writer and this is an amazing story. I recommend anyone read this story. It is simple, beautiful and is now one of my favorites of all time.

Short Synopsis: Bella is always finding trouble and its a good thing she has Edward (vampire) and Jacob (werewolf) to protect her. Of course, vampires and werewolves don't mix so there is a bit of a power struggle occurring as both Edward and Jacob are in love with Bella. In this book Edward and Jacob come together to protect Bella.

New Moon was very depressing and dark as Bella was struggling with her emotions surrounding Edwards "departure". This book had a more positive note which was a good change. The "love triangle" between the three characters is intense and I felt my loyalties to Edward being tested. This book is filled with drama, suspense, love, agony, and danger. Again, it is a part of the Twilight Series which I recommend so this is another integral part of the story as a whole.

I see many people commenting on the lack of Bella's respect for herself and her lack of direction and character which may lead people to not want to read this series. I think this is a YA series and that needs to be taken with a grain of salt. Bella does lack a lot of character but I'm not completely sure this book was meant to leave a deep impression on your heart of morale, etc. I think it was written for entertainment purposes and in that sense it does a pretty good job on a whole. Of course, each of us have our personal preferences and I respect that but encourage anyone who is interested in this series to start with Twilight and read it for yourself...it's only then that you can decide if you like this series or not.

In this book Bella has been dating Edward for 6 months and has been very happy except for the fact that he won't grant her birthday wish...he won't agree to turn her into a vampire. On her birthday Edward takes her to his home to celebrate with his family and an accident occurs that triggers second thoughts in everyone's minds. Edward becomes seemingly more and more distant (in his mind, for Bella's own good) and eventually tells her that his family is leaving Forks and will not be coming back. This book characterizes her feelings of abandonment and depression as she is left by the man she loves.

Jacob, the werewolf, becomes more prominent in this story as his friendship (and his love) for Bella grows.

For me, I didn't enjoy this book as much. I was wrapped up in the story of Twilight so I was unable to put this book down as I waiting for something more to happen in this book. However, I recommend reading this whole series and this is an integral part of the story so it must be included...just for me it wasn't as fulfilling as some of the other books.

When reading about the plot of this book I was captivated, however when I actually read the book I was disappointed. It sounded like a book that was different from many...an eye-opening experience, putting aside any preconceived beliefs you have related to this topic. I was "left disappointed".

I have heard from several people that the story gets better as the series continues but I was dissatisfied by this book and am discouraged about continuing to read this series. Towards the middle of the book I felt as if I was forcing myself to read it and I became bored by the repetitious storyline. It left me with a stale feeling. Perhaps at some point I will read the next book, "Tribulation Force", in the hopes that it is better than "Left Behind".

Twilight was where my love for this series began. I would have to say Twilight is my favorite book of the series. This book was an easy read which made it nice because I wasn't able to put it down! I had a need to know what was going to happen next. This book is the introduction of all the characters and it was interesting getting to know them and seeing them intertwine with one another as the plot thickened. I do think this series is seriously hyped up but I think this book is worth reading for any age. I think it caters to the younger audience (thus it being a YA read) however, I did find enjoyment from this novel.

I enjoyed this book. It was a story of a woman who lives in a home in Nantucket and due to financial reasons decides to rent out rooms in her home. Several different characters move in for different reason and their lives become intertwined in various ways. There was a twist in this book as well which really brought the story full circle. I definitely recommend this book to anyone who enjoys a story of drama, love, fate and the struggles in life!

This is my first Jodi Picoult book. I was inspired to read it based on the impending release of the film. (I enjoy reading books and seeing the films to compare.) I really enjoyed this book and for me I wasn't able to put it down. It was a heart wrenching story but also caught me by surprise with a twist I wasn't expecting. I was touched by this story and am looking forward to reading more Jodi Picoult novels.
