I don't know that it has to do with our difference in age. I just thought that the book was dry. I have enjoyed many great works of non-fiction, including many about the civil war, its participants, abolitionism, the revolutionary war, the presidents, worms, honeybees, civil rights, you name it. Just thought the book was lacking something. It definitely got better in the second half, but I thought it could have been so much more. I also didn't find myself going to the dicitionary at all (with Updike, I have to juggle his book and my collegiate dictionary -- the pocket dictionary just won't do). Anyway, glad you enjoyed it.
I am almost done with This Republic of Suffering. Definitely disappointed. Was wondering how the author would fill a 270 page book about death in the civil war. It seems to have been accomplished through endless repitition. Also, very dry writing style, reads like a thesis, not like a good book of non-fiction. I was curious about your thoughts.
