Michelle Buckley has lived in the Midwest all her life and she has wanted to be a writer ever since she was a little girl.
Her first novel was Bulletproof Soul. It is a story that celebrates the resiliency of women from the ghetto to the 'burbs. Her second novel, Trippin' (a tale about a buck-wild travel club with a serial killer in the mix) will be re-released in May 2008.
As a result of her debut writing effort, Black Issues Book Review Magazine included her in the July/August 2005 issue as an up and coming African American author -- a 'fresh breeze.' Her novel Bulletproof Soul, was also selected as the VIBE May 2005 Book of the Month and it was chosen as a 2005 Blackexpressions.com 'Editor's Pick' and 'Summer Favorite.'
Trippin' was selected by blackrefer.com as a General Fiction Novel of the Year.
This is not the first time Michelle's writing has been unleashed on the world. In 2000, she was included in the Essence #1 bestseller, Souls of My Sisters (Kensington). SOMS is a collection of true-life essays written by African-American women for African-American women. Others included in the book are women like civil rights advocate Hazel Duke, entertainers Mary J. Blige and Tionne 'T-Boz' Watkins and best-selling author Rosalyn McMillan. Her essay, Young, Gifted & Dying, was about a friend that battled cancer and died in her 20s.
In addition to writing fiction novels, Michelle has written four screenplays -- including one about organ donors that fall in love. She's also written a screenplay that's a contemporary retelling of a Shakespeare classic and she's written the true-life story of a black female soldier during wartime.
When she is not working on fiction and nonfiction writing projects, Michelle manages her own Kansas City freelance writing and media relations company, Perfect Pitch Communications. Her company has handled assignments for clients like Black Enterprise Magazine, Hallmark Cards, Health Midwest and the Kauffman Foundation.
Before starting her own business, Michelle worked as a media relations manager for Kansas City-based Hallmark Cards, Inc. Michelle is most proud of the time she spent at Hallmark promoting the African-American card line, Mahogany as well as the time she spent involved with media and product signing tours for author and best-selling spiritualist Iyanla Vanzant and the popular Christian Fiction author, Jan Karon.
