I learned to read before I turned 4, and am rarely ever found without a book nearby. I almost always have at least 3 or 4 books I'm currently in the process of reading. When I was a child, I wanted to grow up to be a librarian. It wasn't until I was older that I learned that librarians do not spend their days reading on the job. So I gave up... more »

Just also wanted to say that if a book club up your way ever wants to "meet" via Skype, I can do that. Have "visited" with several book clubs via Skype, and have several more on my calendar...it's great fun for me, and the groups seem to enjoy it as well.

    Thanks for your posts, Karina!

Karina, thank you for this interesting post. I don't think I've shared with you that my novel has been recommended as YA literature (pardon me if I'm repeating myself)--I hope this site allows URLs to be passed on: http://www.reading.org/General/Publications/blog/BlogSinglePost/11-09-14/Young_Adult_Book_Review_The_Dry_Grass_of_August.aspx

I've spoken via Skype with a high school English class in Ohio, and in person in Clinton, NY, with two high school (senior) creative writing classes. Those discussions were just wonderful...the students in Ohio had to have read at least four chapters of my book; the ones in New York were mostly interested in me talking about the writing process.

Thanks for recommending Dry Grass to members of your group. Apparently it does indeed make a good book club choice, at least based on how many such groups have contacted me. I've appeared at at least a dozen here in North Carolina, and that's always a rollicking good time...I love being with readers! Where is your group, what part of the country?

    haha, sorry.
I actually just started reading it and like it so far. I accidentally clicked on the stars and didn't mean to and tried to remove them and messed up the whole thing. Give me a few days and I will update with my true rating. :-)

I just finished reading "The Silent Boy" and really enjoyed it. I don't know if that is the right word "enjoyed". but it was good. I have an autistic grandson and it made me think of him. Such a hard silent life for some of those children.

I finished Confessions of a Shopaholic. It was cute and funny, but there were too many swear words including the F word several times, so that was annoying. I still feel like I liked it though. It made me want to go shopping, but I would never shop like she does. Brands never have meant much to me, only prices.

    Hi Karina,
I was avoiding doing what I am supposed to be doing this afternoon, so I took a few minutes to browse your shelf. You and I have very similar taste in books, so I got some great ideas and also took a few from my wish list off my shelf after reading your reviews. Thanks for taking the time to put all of your 1571 books on here!!! Have a great weekend, Carol

I went to her website, too, and when I read that about the 5th book, I went out and bought #3. I'll probably go and buy #4 too because there are over a hundred people waiting for it on PBS.com. It's such a fun series, it's a shame that the publisher won't back the next one yet.

BTW, I did read "The Secret Life of CeeCee Wilkes"--it was very compelling and hard to put down, but it was definitely a PG-13 for some language and "adult situations."

    Happy reading!
