Painting is "Girl in front of the Mirror" by Balthus, possible pedophile and all around King of the Cats.

Note about ratings: I'm rating on a system that takes into account both personal preference and quality of literature. Thus, although "Julius Caesar" is not a book I adored, it's Shakespeare. Shakespeare deserves at least four... more »

You know, I forget that "Member of the Wedding" is a book. I always think of it as a play (Julie Harris' big break) and film. I should read it.

No, I'm not very intersted in contemporary poetry, I'm afraid. I tend to gravitate to the "canonical" in all my reading. Actually, it's only recently I've begun reading poetry again - a little bit before sleep (although I often find I'm rather too stimulated to drift off very quickly). I came across Mark Doty through my fiction reading, I think ...he was quoted and I liked the poem enough to seek out a volume of his verse. I quite liked it, but oh, it's been 15 years since I've read it.

Oh, no, I am not feeling defensive in the least, honestly! I urge you to post that note on the discussion thread. These are exactly the types of debates I want happening on AA all the time. Please don't think I'm getting upset - just interested.

    Thames, dear,

I’ve missed your participation at Anglophiles Anonymous. I hope it wasn’t something Mrs. Danvers said. Please do drop in – we’re attempting to determine our Top Ten Favourite British Novels, amongst other vital matters. And feel free to start your own discussion threads if none catch your fancy.

    Yours faithfully,

    Tinky

Hi Katie, Just a quick note to say I'm glad I read The Zookeeper's Wife. I've read lots of information about resistance fighters in WWII, but this was an interesting variation. Plus I was fascinated by all the animals Ackerman described. Now I want to see those "wild" horses and bison!

Yes, I would count the Irish, not being a purist about these things. After all, their accents are just as appealing. We're only 12 chapters into the Pickwick Papers, very harmless reading on the literary front. Think about joining us if we're not too insane for you.

How are your Anglophile credentials? If you keen for all books with a British accent, you might enjoy our little madhouse. Take a peek over at Anglophiles Anonymous and see what you think. It's private, but you can view the postings. If it's something you might fancy, drop a note to Mrs. Danvers.

I remember reading and liking Pope very much years and years ago in my freshman year in college. He's definitely on my mind to revisit.
