I read this at least once per year. Always a pleasure. Full of wit, adventure and imagination.

  • Selected Writings of Jonathan Edwards, Second Edition
    • Rated 0 stars

Read one of these writings for a librivox.org project. Edwards plunges deep into the heart of man and how we relate to our creator. Always a joy, though a combination of older english, plus deeply hierarchical writing outline, makes you feel you could read it 20 times without catching half of it. Deep, serious, consequential writing as this is so missing today.

  • Instant Boatbuilding with Dynamite Payson

A fun read with practical purposes in mind. Good illustrations and tutorials have inspired me to build a boat following his method. Lots of older versions of this book available too that have different sets of plans.

Great concepts - touches on many of the weaknesses of 'western' labour, including office work versus other work that is more 'real' and physical. Worth a read for some new ideas for local and personal vocation choices, as well as debunking the so called benefits of the knowledge economy.

I found it a bit hard to follow, with some challenging thoughts and language, and didn't see the connection between sections/chapters as clearly as I suspect I will on second reading :)

  • The Nautical Chart

Recommended by some other readers before a trip to Spain, I didn't end up finishing it. It was engaging for the first few chapters, but then, seemingly out of nowhere, the protagonist's language and some disturbing mental pictures came on the scene. I didn't bother reading any more, it was too distracting. Mind you, I don't watch TV either, so perhaps I'm just a bit more sensitised to violent or graphic images and swearing.

I listened to an unabridged mammoth audiobook of this - it was very well presented.

As for the story, I found most of it very interesting and engaging. The philosophical underpinnings peeked through almost all the time, but I felt the story became adversely overshadowed by the ideology in the central speech near the end. I'm not a Randian after all, but found the story line and many concepts intriguing and worth reading. But I admit to ignoring most of the central ideological diatribe.

Good tragic story kept me engaged and thinking throughout. Felt slow to start but the depth of plot drew me in and was satisfying. A fair (masculine) companion to those who like Jane Eyre for the sheer drama and desperation of that protagonist.

Have seen/started two different video dramatisations - the single DVD one felt awfully condensed, while the 3 disc set (different company) looked too amateurish to draw me in.

  • Robert Ludlum's The Moscow Vector (A Covert-One Novel)
    • Rated 1 stars

Some interesting plot ideas about biological agents, but I couldn't inspire myself to totally finish the book - it wasn't quite as gripping as I had hoped. Maybe I'll try again later. I didn't realise that it was written by Patrick Larkin and not Ludlum, perhaps that's why I didn't like it as much... I'm not sure.

Finally got through this recently, after years of knowing I should have read it in high school :)

  • Sunshine Sketches of a Little Town

OF course a great Canadian author is an expert on sarcasm and wit... plenty of subtle humour and funny characters surprised me in this book. I wished I learned about this when I was younger, but when I saw a monologue play about Leacock's life, I knew I'd like to read his stuff... and I wasn't disappointed. It's a leisurely stroll through simple and silly lives in a rural town - I think any conscious reader will find parallels to their own town.
