My name's Colette, I am the proud mother of an author. I passed on my love of reading to my daughter Carla R. Sarratt.

Carla's first book "Freshman Focus" was self-published in December 2006. "Freshman Focus" the first book in the Carter G. Woodson series by Carla R. Sarratt. "Freshman Focus" takes you into the school life of of Kendra, Lamar, Destiny, Steven. It shows African-American families growing up on the same street, playing together as babies, the friendships, the sense and importance of family from the African-American perspective.
It is refreshing to read an excellent book about African-American families growing up with the normal challenges of life, a chance to reflect on your own high school days through the lives of Kendra, Lamar, Cidney, Destiny and Steven.

I can't wait for the second book in the series due out in 2008.

As a kid in the sixties,I was called a bookworm. In the summers I looked forward to the library's summer reading club. While others would be playing outside, I would sit on the front porch and read all day long. My first job was working as a page in the neighborhood library. In the sixities there were no African-American authors writing children books so I read mostly Caucasian authors. The first African-American authors I read were Langston Hughes and James Baldwin. "Soul on Ice" by Eldrige Cleaver was the first book I owned by an African-American author.

Carla Sarratt is my number ONE FAVORITE AUTHOR!
A few of my other favorite African-American authors are Sheila Copeland, Sheila Willliams, Paula Woods, Grace Edwards, Victoria Murray just to name a few (smile). I enjoy to read series and one of my favorite series authors is Fern Michaels. « less
