    Hey Ben,
I did not photograph the Wenchuan groud zero. I was there a couple years before, and it was truly lovely and I made some friends with the Tibetan locals (who I've called and are ok). The propaganda exhibit sounds interesting to me just for the sheer audacity of it all. Thanks for getting in touch. CHINA: Portrait of a People due out soon...

Hi Ben, I saw it yesterday at bookstore too. Thanks for your recommendation. I am reading a book about the French prophet Nostradamus, non-fiction though. Recently, I spent too much time on youtube for some documentaries not reading.

I know you went to Harvard. Tell me something about your study there and current work!

    Hi Ben,

Thanks for adding me as your friend. I've read Hagedorn's "Dogeaters" roughly four years ago. I loved it very much. ^__^ I haven't completely updated my shelf yet, but I'll be including her as well. :) I'll check your shelf out, too.

    Hi Ben,
Yup, it's me, dressed up as Ice. It was for a Fantasy Fair my sister and I visit every year. This time I was Ice and she Fire. That 'thing' in my hand is my Ice-wand... hahaha, is suppose to be but in real it's a iron stick with a blue ball of glass for in the garden. ;o) Shall I send you the whole picture?

    Dear Ben,
Today, actually an hour ago, I finished Jan Wongs new book Beijing Confidential and I want to recommend it to you. After reading Red China Blues, I'm a big fan of Jan Wong and I also really liked this book of her. In the book she tells about the old Beijing which is disappearing because of all the changing for the Olympic Games 2008. But she also tells about the search for the woman who she denounced when he was a student at Beijing University. I hope you will like it as much I as did.
About Napoleon: Hahaha, that's okay! It's the truth and Holland's history so we can't change anything about that can we! I'm not that nationalistic about my country. Nationalism only brings war in the end. I love Holland because it's my home, but I also could live in Scotland, Iceland, Paris (where I was a week ago) or even China. Maybe when I'm older nationalism will get me (Oh my... I hope not!)
Did you see the trailer of the new movie 'Up the Yangtze'? You can check it on this addres: www.apple.com/trailers/independent/uptheyangtze/trailer/ I want to see this movie, but on the other hand I don't want to know anything about it. The scenes in the trailer almost brought me to tears. But it's the progress of a country in change and who are we, the rich West to stop them ruining there old culture for making there economy better? After all, Holland did the same thing 40 years ago. As a historian I'm just sad to see old the old things go. I wonder how you feel about the changing of China. Love, Monique

Thanks Ben, but it's neither of these 2 books. I really wish I'd written down the author's name. Any suggestions of where else I could ask?

Hi Ben, how is life over there? I’m in the middle of Uni-exam...our new year is different from one in other countries we own our new year celebration which is in 21th of march and we call it “Nowrooz” now = new & Rooz= day. This tradition has been remaining for more than 2500 years. If you like to know more about Iranian culture I can recommend you some websites. I couldn’t get you by “reading an article about the website www.goodreads.com
it said that it was very popular among Iranian youth “
.Is it possible for you to explain me more.

Re: Grass and his Nobel - you asked me on my page - I don't that cancelling the NObel makes any sense. The interesting thing is that a number of people knew, because in private and even not so private conversations, e.g. with other writers, he talked about his SS membership for many years, for instance with a Jewish Austrian writer I know. The question is why he never wrote about it, and why he rather took the risk of exposing himself in such an odd way (I have no answer to this).

Frankly, I suppose that writers, or any other people, who have been through such a long and complex itinerary in life must almost have complex (meaning also contradictory, controversial) biographies, which is part of why they and their writing are so valuable for the rest of us.
