Hello and thanks. Looking forward to Maigret's Christmas (used to read Euro Dets Fic. Freeling, Van de Wetering.) You might need to know that in Weimar Era Berlin, 1920 you could lift a bier muggen at Onkel Toms Hutte and then retire to your new more hygenic and rationalized apartment at Onkel Toms Siedlung. Bon Voyage avec Method Gun!

Thank you for the invitation. Of course I remember you from Artists & Humanitarians. Unfortunately, I work a LOT and my reading has been shamefully nonexistent for a long time, but thats going to change in a couple months.

Hi Kirk, I got your friend request at my gmail account, but see we're already friends.
I'm still waiting to pick up some Maigret mysteries, based on your rec.

Thanks for the invite to shelfari. Might help me organize titles, books, thinking.
Last book I was really gripped by: Colm Toibin's collection of stories Mothers and Sons. Especially the dark first story and the longer novella. The 1st story one of the most psychologically terrifying stories I have read. Mothers, yes, but no June Cleavers in this group. I'm going to try to put it on my shelf.

Try "Dominion: The Power of Man, The Suffering of Animals, and the Call to Mercy" by Matthew Skully. I'll warn you: he's a Republican. But this book goes far beyond the political. It's a powerful treatise on our relationship with animals and our mandate (religious or otherwise) to care for them. I'm no animal rights activist (although I own a pit bull and am very concerned about breed specific legislation). But this book is potentially life changing.

Thanks for inviting me to this site, Kirk! I miss you!

P.S. I didn't like Didion's "The Year of Magical Thinking" very much. I thought it could have been cut in half. I heard her speak recently; she's had a pretty rough life...she's so tiny now she looks like she's disappearing.
