I really enjoy reading (duh), but I don't read nearly as much as I wish I did. I enjoy books that I can invest my time in willingly - dictionary long books need to be *really* good for me to start reading them. I generally enjoy fiction, though I read a bit of everything. I'd really like to get some suggestions on biographies, history, political... more »

  • The Hobbit
    • Rated 5 stars

This book is so enjoyable and engaging it's hard to believe that the same author then turned around and wrote a fictional history book about characters that dragged on for three novels.

If you've tried to read the Lord of the Rings Trilogy and can't get past the countless pages of footnote like descriptions - pick up The Hobbit. It'll explain - in one easy and enjoyable read - why JRR Tolkien is allowed to write other sleep-inducing novels and still be hailed as a great story-teller.

We're going to Scotland in 2008 and bought this book for research. Its a good tool - but I found that the money costs were off and that the selection of hotels, restaurants, and attractions were limited. If you're thinking about a trip - this would be for you. If you've decided and are trying to plan - you might want another more detailed or specific book.

Great book - life changing for some if you're open to it. Subject matter of depression is of course a solemn one - but the journey of the character is amazing and inspiring.

The best part of this book, to me, was the rhythm and fluidness of the language. As I read it, I felt like I wanted to read it out loud like you would a poem to a crowded room under a bright single light. Truly amazing.

This book is what sparked my love of reading again, a love that was buried deep after "The Little-Sisters Baby-Sitters Club" ran out :)

Wonderful story and very lasting. I read this nearly ten years ago and I can remember everything still - the entire series is a must read though the ending can break a heart or two.

I was given this book by my mother who said, "I was confused and lost through most of it. If you read this and understand it - will you explain it to me?"

This is what I told her, "Mom - it's about love through time and space and that's all you need to know."

Great book, so engaging and lasting in your mind. Best book I'd read in a very long time, it can fit into so many genres easily.

I was drawn to this book because its been compared, lightly, to the style and wit of the Veronica Mars TV character. Slow to start with a weak plot, I felt that this story concentrated more on character development of the family than on the story itself. From what I understand, this book is supposed to be the beginning of a series. I'm hoping that the next book, if it is every published, has gotten the family development out of the way and concentrates on the story and the supposed crime-solving skills of this crack-pot group of lovingly dysfunctional family members.

I was given this book as a gift and it took me a long time to become interested in it - however - I'm so glad I gave it a chance again and again and again because it is wonderful. The author weaves a stunning life of a woman struggling to find who she is after tragedy strikes countless times. Its heartfelt, thought-provoking, and inspiring.

This was one of the first Utopian society books I'd ever read, and though I've read many since this is still the best. Wonderfully descriptive without being too heavy in the words, it moves fluidly from one point to the next. Very enjoyable read.

I'm not that big of a fan of Sci-Fi / Fantasy books - but I loved this one with a passion. It was my favorite out of the three Earthsea novels and I felt I took so much away from the story that I could put towards my life - as cheesy as that might sound.

Great, great read - though read the first 2 novels before hand :)

  • Ubuntu Linux for Non-Geeks: A Pain-Free, Project-Based, Get-Things-Done Guidebook
    • Rated 4 stars

I picked this book up after diving into Linux from Windows - drawn in by the project based learning. Its a great beginners tool with a lot of tips, tricks, and insight into the operating system. However, I felt sometimes like the lesson went beyond the learners level of the book without proper explanation - but that is simply my opinion. It has taught me so much and I would recommend it highly!
