    Snow Flower and The Secret Fan was probably a library book. Interesting read. I might not have selected it, but for Book Group. Fascinating glimpse into long-ago China; the men did not even consider that women had enough intelligence to write anything they would be interested in reading. The relationship between the two girls is very poignent. And the vivid descriptions about what they did to the girls feet will amaze you!

    After reading your personal information, I think you would find the complex relationship among Leisel and the Hubermans interesting. Mrs Huberman particlarly seems gruff and resentful yet loving.

    The senseless deaths of war and the different reactions of the characters trapped in it were overwhelming sometimes. I found toward the end I resented the loss of every soul overworked Death bore away. Perhaps that was the point.

    Even though Leisel is the title character, the vopice is that of Death and the author makes use of the novel perspective well.

    Linda - thanks for getting me into Shelfari! I was editing my review of LES MISERABLES, looked over at the Groups who entertained that book when I clicked on one group it was a group called FRENCH BOOKS !!!! I thought I was in heaven. like a kid in a candy shop. I was tempted to join, but I don't know if I am ready for that. In the meantime, I can read their shelf. . . and pick a book to read. There is also an historical novels group!!!! I'll tell you again, working is really getting in the way of my reading career! so, thanks again for Shelfari !

    Thank you, Linda! I too would enjoy a time to get together and discuss. . . . back in my high school days, we had a saying, "heavy, deep and real" It was something to do with what the nuns were trying to get us to think about, other than our silly selfish selves! on yet another note, I had been intrigued by Patty's "knitting", which sat so long on her desk before we moved. .... I thought we might do that one night. Before ya know it, it will be warm and no one will want to sit with wool on her lap! of course, I don't think we could combine the 2 things; Patty not being a reader (or deep thinker; hey - I could be wrong) . . . . Angela told me she knits; I would like to re-learn. I dabbled 35 years ago - once. All we need to do is find a date. I could pick up some sticks and a pretty skein, and away we'd go!

    Linda, I have now finished reading HE SPEAKS TO ME. . . thank you so much! I thoroughly enjoyed it. Very basic, easy to read and understand. Not so deep and heavy or overly intellectual. Please let me know if you would like it back; I can't recall if this was a gift (am I rude ?) or a loan. I am happy to return it if you know someone who would like to read it. If it is mine to keep, I shall enjoy popping it open at random for some good ongoing reflection. . . .God bless you!

    Linda - just curious if you have Jeifer Maguire in your Shelfari friends and if so, can I make her a friend from Shelfari, or do I need her screen name to invite her friendship? I'm guessing a mother of 4 might not have time for Shelfari....mb

    Open the group up, then in the upper right hand corner you will see Invite Friends. Click on that and you can select your friends from shelfari and add email adress of those who are not currently Shelfari members.

    Nice to hear from you Linda! I highly recommend "The Gifts of the Jews" though it has been a few years since I've read it. I also recommend Thomas Cahill's "How the Irish Saved Civilization." He has written several books in a series that I think is called "The Hinges of History." Very readable and will make you appreciate cultures that you may not have paid much attention to before. (speaking for myself anyway.)
