  • Misquoting Jesus: The Story Behind Who Changed the Bible and Why

A very easy read about what the Bible is and how it became that way. Ehrman tries to avoid stepping on anyone's toes and generally does a good job, but as noted below, anyone who claims the Bible is "perfect" or "inerrant" is in for a few unpleasant surprises. Ehrman is very scholarly and thorough, and the material should prove fascinating to anyone with even a casual interest in scripture.

  • Borges: Selected Non-Fictions

Borges in one of the greatest writers of fiction. The intellectually taxing nature of his themes often distracts from the simple elegance of his writing. Everyone should read his work.

Brutal, vulgar, hilarious, and transcendent. I think that De Bernieres is actually better than Marquez. These books are a must for anyone who enjoys magical realism, and a good introduction to the genre for those who need one. Reading them in public can be hazardous, as one may be reduced to hysterics or tears with very little warning. Highly worthwhile overall.

  • Chord Chemistry

Chord Chemistry is a really wonderful resource for guitarists at all levels of ability and education. For those who understand theory, it contains chapters on voice leading and other relatively high level stuff. For those just beginning it has many pages of diagrams showing hundreds of chords in a multitude of voicings. Throughout is Greene's helpful and engaging writing, explaining how to use the chords and the book. This volume is worth having even if you only crack it open once in a while to try out some new chords, or to find a voicing of an Am7b5 that works in a progression you want to play.

A great, funny, compelling read, whether or not you agree with the extremist message. This book also contains possibly the most carefully set up bad pun in the history of literature. Anyone who's the least bit "green" must read this book, and anyone who isn't should.

  • His Dark Materials Trilogy (The Golden Compass; The Subtle Knife; The Amber Spyglass)

This series is far deeper than the majority of children's literature; so much so that it's been a runaway hit with adults as well. Pullman took a lot of flak for his anti-religious stance, but some religious people have found ways to interpret the books that line up with their beliefs. Either way, Pullman takes children more seriously than most children's authors, and that above all else makes this work stand out to me.
