My shelf is incomplete, to say the least. Currently, I'm reading along with my son, mostly enrichment books that go with his school assignments. We have a new "book basket" of books every week to plow through, science, history, you name it. Great stuff. Curriculum covers grades 2-8, and book basket books run the gamut. Have enjoyed reading... more »

Wonderful and fascinating, with excellent photos, my favorite being on page 59, which captures the love between Bell and his wife, Mabel. Forward written by the great-grandson of Alexander Graham Bell. An interesting peek inside the life of a famous inventor, whose true passion was teaching and helping the deaf.

Wonderful story, based on a true experience, passed down from generation to generation. A great human touch addition to a study of the Civil War for students of any age.

I really like the National Geographic books, and this one brings Abe Lincoln's childhood to life. Good art, fascinating story that fleshes out an otherwise (in most books) dry discussion of Abraham Lincoln's early life.

I love this book. The art is excellent: accomplished, creative and interesting. The story is fascinating and inspiring, human and touching. A well-written and illustrated gem about an important events in history.

  • Juneteenth: Celebrating Freedom in Texas
    • Rated 5 stars

Such a wonderful book, written by a member of the Barrett family. As a Texas girl, born in Austin, I believe reading this book is important to a study of Texas history for a full cultural understanding of our state. Filled with delightful stories and wisdom, with an historical update at the end, and a fascinating glossary. The Barrett homestead was named a Texas historical site in 1988.

Warning: The book's description of the Juneteenth celebration will make you hungry.

Easy to read, large print (1969 version, published by Canadian publishers). An inspiring story of a World War I hero, which has an ironic end as he gets in trouble with the IRS. This book mentions the 1941 movie with Gary Cooper, and says it is fairly true to fact. It was the royalties from this movie deal that ultimately caused his tax problems.

I learned at least one origin of the phrase "digging out" in this book. Creative, whimsical illustrations.

Hilarious Dr. Seuss delight, "...published on his 82nd birthday. That year he returned to Springfield, strolling down Mulberry Street, visiting the owners of his old house on Fairfield Street. Hundreds of children gathered to chant, 'We love you, Dr. Seuss!' Stage fright had remained a problem for him, and he avoided the spotlight whenever possible. But on this day he walked through the crowd, shaking hands, and could be seen wiping away tears." (Quote from "The Boy on Fairfield Street: How Ted Geisel Grew Up to Become Dr. Seuss") Dr. Seuss published one more book (in 1990), "Oh the Places You'll Go!".

This book was awarded a Caldecott Award winner by the American Library Association (for the illustrations) and is a typical Dr. Seuss delight. It was written in the post World War II era.
