Hi Family,
Well lets see, I'm a southern girl, born and raised in Baton Rouge, La (I'm a Leo). I attended UNO, LSU and then I attended and graduated from Southern University in Baton Rouge, with a degree in Criminal Justice(Summer 1986). Dallas became my home in April 1986 when I went to work for the City of Dallas....I've been there every since.
I've always been a reader. I remember reading everything I could get my hands on. My mom I think is who started me on reading. She read the local newspaper every night before turning in. I would crawl into bed with her and read the section she had just finished. We would read articles to each other, share the funnies and check the sales ad's together. I miss her more everyday, not being able to share more books with her and just stuff......
In high school I loved my English classes the most. Took greek mythology so that I could read those cool stories on Zeus and his folks ;-) College was the same, I took so many english core classes, that could've been my minor. I think my favorite class was taken at SU, Writers of the South. I found authors like Pinkie Gordon Lane and Arthenia Bates Millican. Ms Millican holds a special place in my heart, she was a guest speaker in our class and her books "Seeds beneath the Snow" and the Deity Nodded" are classics as far as I'm concern. If you come across either, read them, they are jewels.
I started reading romance about 7 years ago, prior to that, it was classics, mystery and of course murder and mayhem. A friend gave me the book The Price of Passion, by Evelyn Palfrey to read one day at work. I took that book home and was up until 3 am, I could'nt put it down. I was lucky enough to speak and eventually meet Ms Evelyn and to this day consider her, friend, and the sister I never had. Well Ms E listed several books in the back of her book, other romance writers and their books. I took that list and bought every last one that was there. Read them all and was hooked on the romance every since.
She had Beverly Jenkins listed, I'd just saw her book "Topaz", that one of my co-workers had just bought. We all read that, and I again went and bought every thing I could find on her(those I could find in the stores, others I bought on ebay or ordered). She also had Kindred by Octavia Butler listed. Family if you have not read this book, do so soon. Ms Butler is/was the Queen of Sci-Fi. Her other wirtings are also great, but this one is my favorite. Her last book "Fledgling" was a vamp story, and I wished she'd have had time to do a follow up to it, but it was not to be.
I've been to 4 slam jams (Atlanta, Dallas, Sherveport, Chicago which was off the hook!!) I also went to Rochelle Alers's retreat in Orlando.............I had a blast at them all. I've been to other book events, Romance Writers Convention Dallas, Romantic Times Conference, Houston and plan to one day go on Brenda's Cruise.
Aside from reading, I love to take pictures. Beware, the picture will change often since I have a zillion shots around here.
Anyway, this spot is for bits on yourself and I've written a short story ;-). But family, I'm sooo happy to be here where we can share our likes and dislikes of the "written" word.
Take Care....Keep reading,
Peace..........Sharon
