Well Menstruating Mall is my favorite Mellick (well that i have read of his so far), Sayle's books are brilliant and unforgivably not well known. I do not know Silent Weapons so you'll have to let us know what you think.

As a lead on from the Bizarro stuff, reading your information you may like the work of David Ambrose his books Coincidence and Superstition based around scientific theory are brilliant.

Glad you like. From what I understand, DUNE was in developement hell for nearly ten years before Lynch ever got a hold of it. Also, I think the plan was to make each of the DUNE novels into a movie (sort of a franchise ala Star Wars); unfortunately, DUNE 'bombed' a the box office, so that plan was scrapped.

    Hey Chris,

Just wanted to let you know about this website I came across on Digg. It showcases some of the art of Chris Foss, who worked as a concept artist on David Lynche's DUNE. Thought you might be interested. Here's the link:

Also if you like a good coffee table book with scientific pictures, you might enjoy Cosmic Imagery by John Barrow which takes in key images from science generally.

Thank you Christophe, that's very kind of you. Mathematics books for the layman? I have many by Martin Gardner, his recreational mathematics output is copious and interesting and his forays into the philosophy and logic of much of science is an intellectual treat. The man has a good sense of humour too. He's where much of my mathematical reading began. I note that you like science fiction that is - in my words - "plausible". Couldn't agree more. Anything else I would class as Fantasy fiction which is not to my taste but each to his own. Don't know if you're interested but there is even a substantial body of fiction that is confined to mathematical ideas:

Have you heard of Keith Devlin? He is a maths professor and populariser in the USA -- and just happens to originate from my hometown. There's so much stuff out there for you to go at. Btw, the books on my Shelfari list are just a fraction of my collection that I could recall from memory. I would be glad to help if there's anything you are particularly looking for. Best wishes.

    Hey Chris,

Yeah, I've actually never seen this book (it's on my wish list at the moment) and outside of it being listed on Amazon, I would have never known it even existed; frankly, I still have my doubts given that the film was a box office bomb upon it's release and that any merchandise for it may have been canceled shortly thereafter. If it does exist, I think that it would be worth tracking down, if for no other reason than seeing the creative process behind one of the first versions of Dune put to film (and the only one done with Frank Herbert's blessing, no less.) A lot of Dune fans loath David Lynch's version but I love it. It was what initially sparked my interest in reading the Dune books and in many ways (namely talent) it is superior to the mini-series (which, by the way, has it's own 'making of' book as well). My advice: if you find it, get it. And let me know what you think of it.

    Greetings fellow Sci-Fi Freaks!

Seems like we have a lot in common! And, enough things in difference to make GOOD discussions (arguements?) possible!

Hope you will take the challenge and join the FUN!

    Hi Chris,

I apologize for not responding sooner, I've been out of town. Thanks for making me co-admin of the Starships group. I will try to get a new picture uploaded soon for the group avatar (and maybe try to stimulate some more discussions while I'm at it).

    Hi Chris,

Just wanted to drop you a note and ask you what the new ship avatar will be for month of October for the Starships discussion group. I've been shamefully neglecting most of my Shelfari groups of late--just been too busy lately, so I'm trying to make up for lost time. Hope you are doing well and let me know what you decide.

    Cheers
