I really wanted to like this but the main character was so annoying and completely bratty, and not in a fun way. The side characters kept me going and that fact that the novel was short.

I could barely get through this. I'm so so sorry I picked this to be my first DeLillo novel. I will someday try again when the pain has been forgotten.

Terrible people and boring story. Trite to the end. I mean the kid who is obsessed with looking in the sky for Bill Lawton? For real?! Ugg.

  • The Lady Who Liked Clean Restrooms: The Chronicle Of One Of The Strangest Stories Ever To Be Rumoured About Around New York
    • Rated 4 stars

This book lived up to it's clever title. Witty, bittersweet, and funny to the end.

  • When You Are Engulfed in Flames
    • Rated 4 stars

Another witty book from Sedaris. I especially loved his last essay regarding quitting everything fun, i.e., drinking, drugs, and smoking. David how could you?! *Sigh* I guess everyone has to grow up eventually. I just thought Sedaris never would. However, he does also admit to hiding behind his couch when his neighbors stop by so there is room for improvement.

Cookie! Again, another clever, literary mystery in the Nursery Crimes Division. Terribly funny, not necessarily laugh-out-loud, but completely enjoyable.

Thank goodness someone finally explained what Goldielocks was doing in that bed! Hussy.

  • On Chesil Beach: A Novel
    • Rated 4 stars

On Chesil Beach packs an emotional punch for such a little novella. McEwan continues to amaze with his careful wording, clear tone, and moving story. My only qualm lies in the ending. Why Flo's epilogue was deemed unnecessary as opposed to Edward, I certainly couldn't understand. I hope that his was the decision of of bad editing and not the author's decision that Flo's story ended with Edward.

  • The Pharmacist's Mate
    • Rated 3 stars

Moving memoir, packs a punch in such a little book. The story of the author's greif over the loss of her father and her attempts at pregnancy. Would recommend. One gripe . . . what's with the ugly dustjacket? McSweeney's usually does much better. I'll bet the unattractive cover didn't help sales. Just saying.

  • The Almost Moon
    • Rated 2 stars

Sebold certainly doesn't stray from shocking topics. She tackled a child’s abduction and murder in “The Lovely Bones”, her own rape survival in “Lucky”, and now matricide in “The Almost Moon.” The premise of the book was awesome in its simplistic gruesomeness. Sebold’s character Helen had simply been pushed to her breaking point in her care of her mentally ill mother. However, Sebold’s compelling story line was ruined with her plot devices. The entire back story involving her best friend’s son was absurd and unnecessary. This really served to take away from the shock of what Helen had done and the repercussions that were to follow. Sebold is still a great writer but this was a weak book.

  • Star of the Sea
    • Rated 4 stars

There are few events in history more compelling than the Irish Potato Famine, or The Great Hunger, or The Starvation, depending on where your politics fall. The author makes it clear with his pursuasive language, that his heart and sympathies lay with the starving Irish. That said, the story itself is choppy with significant changes in the narration. The ending was unsatisfying, but may have been purposfully left so as real life rarely wraps up neatly. This book was clearly well researched and a truly moving story. Historical fiction at its best.
