“Happiness is not a possession to be prized, it is a quality of thought, a state of mind” Daphne Du Maurier

I am 26 years old and am an avid reader ever since I started putting my letters together to make words. I was fortunate to have a great set of grandparents that bought me books and fostered my reading. Now since I have to fund... more »

LOVED this book! I couldn't put it down. Sarah Brandt is a terrific main character with multifacets. Sergeant Malloy, a perfect counterpart. I am eagerly looking forward to reading more from this series! I highly recommend this book!

A well written thriller. I had trouble connecting with the main character and the plot was somewhat predictable. I hate guessing the ending half way through a book!

    The Shoe Queen

    by Anna Davis
    • Rated 2 stars

Based on the blurb written on the back of the book, I was expecting so so much more. Genevieve, spoiled wife of Robert, has an extensive shoe collection but covets a pair of shoes by a certain designer, Zaccari. She hounds this man until he makes her a pair.. after she tells him the real reason she loves shoes. She has an affair with this man and comes to love him. A silly book with attempts to create some depth, but the overall effect was unbelievable. Get it from the library and save yourself some money if you want to read it.

Not my fav Ibbotson book. I love preWW2 setting and the premise of the story was perfect. However, parts seemed to drag and some characters were painful to read about (Heini!) So annoying it was painful. Ruth is of Jewish descent and must flee Vienna, through a series of events Quin, a professor/friend of the family marries her and through his British citizenship makes it possible for them flee Vienna. Their marriage a secret until annulment is possible the book sets up its plot. It was a pleasant book, but in my opinion, not Ibbotson's best.

A great book that I didn't put down once I started to read it. Very clever and well written. I hope to read more from Jenna Bush. I agree with what another reviewer said, I also didn't care for the affair Trudy had with her subject, the real story is her relationship with her mother and the series of events that occurred during WW2 that allowed for their survival. This isn't a light book, there is heavy subject matter involved. I found it thought provoking.

An interesting read on tolerance between religions and ethnicities. I had a hard time identifying with the main character, I found her slightly bizarre at times. Though in retrospect, it could be from the abusive home situation. Patty Bergen is a Jewish girl befriends a German POW, she takes him food and talks with him above her garage. The story develops around this and includes several coming of age events for Patty.
Patty really is a girl ahead of her time. When the rest of the town/America is getting swept up in a political fever as a result of propaganda, Patty keeps her head on her shoulders and follows her common sense.

The sequel to Summer of My German Soldier really doesn't do the main character justice. It's exactly as another reviewer said "tepid" It does bring some closure to the story, however. This one fell into the sequel trap, never as good as the first one.

A nice book that has some poignant moments intertwined with humor. Holly, a grieving widow, is left a series of notes that Gerry, her dead husband, wrote to be opened monthly. Holly works through her grief and begins to put back the pieces of her life again through the help of these notes and friends/family. It's a sweet book that made me want to watch the movie now!

  • Before I Die

This book is a story told through the eyes of a teenage girl dying from leukemia. We follow her through her rebellions and triumphs as she attempts to do everything that is on her "list" of things to do before she dies, which include having sex, getting a boyfriend, breaking the law etc. I agree with another reviewer, the reader is probably being manipulated while reading this. It's a given you will cry by the end of this book, it's a tear jerker. The fact that you are crying doesn't necessarily mean this is a good book, I thought it was ok. Parts were a little over the top.. but there is a lot of thought provoking material.
